I have some friends that swear they kill the bass and sacs in Petit Amite. I'm going tomorrow evening and checking it out.
I've caught catfish off a pier on Amite, but never tried bass/sac fishing.

I grew up not to far from there and did a good bit of bass fishing in the amite and connecting waterways. It has been a long time (15 yrs) so I dont remember all of the canals, names or docks.
We always did best in ares with less boat traffic and good grass along side boat docks.
We would throw 6" curl tail black or purple worms texas rigged with 3/8 sinkers, white or yellow and black tandem colorado H&H spinners, Bandit 200 series crawfish colored cranks, and gold and orange with black back rattling rouges. If we fished topwater I always did well with full size hula poppers and devils horses in frog patterns.
For bream and crappie we always used live bait (crickets and minnows) and fished well away from boat traffic if we could find it.
For cats try drifting down the edges of the main boat lanes with 2-3 rods rigged with cut bait hanging 6-8 ft deep.

There is or was a bass tournament every Wednesday after the time change in the spring and summer launching out of Canal Bank. The weighs have always been light. Katrina and Gustov put a number on the fish. I remember walking down my dock after Katrina and there were ½ dollar size flounders EVERYWHERE. Lots of fish killed in both events.
I have an underwater fish light that has been on for almost two years. The first year until last spring it was gar and a few catfish. This past spring sac a lait started showing up in good numbers. This fall we caught a few small bass.
This area is not known for trophy fishing…

Lived in the neighborhood to the left of Hilltop on the water? If so, which house?

How did you do with jug lines? Any tips on time (day/night), depth, spots, etc?

we did ok with the jugs in the amite and even diversion canal at night.
we have jugs hooked to styrofoam blocks and regular jugs. on the blocks we have about five hooks at all different depths depending on how deep the water is. the best thing i have found is shad. we try to catch a mess with cast net before we go out.
one of out better spots we have found is bayou sorrell area. if grand bayou is up but on the fall, set out jugs and have a good time. one night last year buddy caught about 60 blues in two runs. i missed that night

I am on the Diversion and have run my neighbor's slat traps with different degrees of success, but have never run jug lines. I have found the cooler months with higher moving water to be productive for the slat traps.

i have never had any luck with slat traps.
i have put nets under the docks by your house and caught a few but nothing to brag about. you might want to try sinking a hoop net out in the middle for a day or so. that might be the key.

I am up river on the Amite close to Freds, been getting some jugs together to throw out in front the camp soon. Will probably run them at night. Will let ya'll know how it goes. Thanks for the info.
