Sold my Gheenoe and bought a used Flats boat today. The GPS on it is shot. I was looking for the board's recommendations on a new one.

I mainly fish Delacroix, Hopedale and Bayou B. The things I really need are ability to update the map card, depth finder, water temp, ect. I was looking at the Lowrance HDS 7, but unsure if that would be overkill.

Was literally just thinking about making this thread. My dad's boat really needs a new finder, and i haven't been keeping up with them the past 10 years, so my tech abilities are few and far between.

sounds like pretty much any current unit will do what you are asking it to do. the difference in price depends on imaging.

I was looking at the Lowrance Hook 7....for getting semi back up to speed.

I would say for satellite imaging any of the units that can take the uploadable maps like lowrance.

Harmon has their own proprietary brand and all of them are garbage for south Louisiana except for the Louisiana marsh and bayous map. That one is worth every penny

The Simrad go series looked pretty sweet at the boat show. Will definitely be going to the go9 xse on my new rig

The LowranceHD series accepts the standard mapping cards, and there's someone on here that might can help you save more than a few bucks. I think its Seapickle.

I had an HDS7 on my previous boat, and just put a HDS9 gen 3 on my current boat. I've only used it one weekend, but very pleased so far.

Next question... which transducer to get?

There's some videos on youtube to help. I watched one put out by Russell Marine that helped me decide. (I also ended up buying my unit from them.)

What's in the update?

Hooks are good for the price but I found them to be very slow when navigation menus when in chart mode with a satellite chip in it. Processor speed is lacking

The thing I’m most looking forward to is fisg shoeing up as a depressed color pallet in down and side imaging. Looks like that part of the update is for the Elite TI too.

Dang that nice.

So people use chirp and downscan side by side because one shows bottom better and one shows fish better? Is that right?

I just installed a Garmin Echomap 74sv. It has chirp DI/SI. It also comes preloaded with freshwater or saltwater charts. If ya have money to burn, , you can add the panoptic transducer.
