Built a raised bed 12'x 4' x 10" and planting cucumbers, lettuce, and broccoli. Also planting a few blackberry plants and strawberries. Any suggestions on what type of blackberries and strawberries to grow? Also any tips on prunning and fertilizing?

Lettuce and broccoli are fall garden plants

You're late on strawberries as well. Bare root plants are planted in the fall so that the strawberries are starting production right now. You can buy the bonnie started plants but I wouldn't expect much production.

Get Apache blackberries, they are thornless. THey also turn into bushes so they'll need to be plant outside of the vegetable garden area.

Here's a good source of garden tips from the LSU Ag center: LSU AG (You can find fertilizing and growing tips for berries here as well)

The farmer's almanac lays out a good work plan for getting the raised bed ready and which plants to plant together: Farmer's Almanac

What plants are you using (tomatoes, cukes, etc.) if not the Bonnie type from the box stores?

I use bonnie for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, but I use seed for cucumbers and squash.

I don't like the strawberry plants bonnie puts out, because the timing isn't right.

gotcha. I always had better luck with cucumbers from seed too.

too warm for lettuce, it will go to seed with the quickness

if you plant broccoli right now, you can probably get a crop in before it gets too hot

Just thinking about this along your 12 foot of garden.

quote:

cucumbers

3-4' of your 12 is gone here for 1-2 plants

quote:

lettuce

2' here for 3-4 plants

quote:

broccoli

2' here for 2-3 plants

quote:

few blackberry plants and strawberries

you dont have much room left for these.

This is just my opinion, but you might rethink your crops

Contain the roots or they will be all up in your raised bed next year!

No. If you don't want them to spread, you need to bury edging around the plants. Otherwise, they will start popping up in your nice raised bed soil a year from now.

I plant 6 - 8 cucumber plants in an 18" pot under a trellis. The trellis is 5' wide galv 4" fencing wired onto 2 grounding rods. Way more cucs than we can eat. Point is, you don't need much ground area to load up on cucs if you go vertical.

I grow cucumbers on a trellis in a raised bed, use about 1' x 4' area with 3 plants and will harvest 30-40 cucumbers if not more. plant them on the north end of the raised bad where they do not shade the rest of the bed.

Been using the LSU Ag center publication for 20 years as a planting guide as well.
