First Time Boat Purchase
Posted by gametimehoop on 4/25/21 at 10:55 am00
I found a Blazer Bay 1860 that i loved, but had the etec evinrude.
Also know the early Kenners are nice, then the guy starting making Frontier/Blackjack.
I'm looking for a low end used 18-20'. Do you guys have any recommendations for other make/models similar to the Blazer 1860?

Meh, I wouldn’t touch a new Mako. Look for used Blazer Bay, Champion, Ranger, Blue Wave, Or Pathfinder. Mako is now owned by Bass Pro and is mass produced. Quality is shite compared to the old Makos.

Just be a big dog and go get you that 25ft Majek, I keep seeing adds for it since I am in Houston and damn they are nice.
What's a couple decades long note on a boat.

quote:he has 20k bro. Read the thread. Obviously you don't know the prices of those boats you mentioned. Those name brand are all 30s and 40s..possibly an 18ft blue wave might get you close to the mako. Makos are just fine. I have a friend who has a 2018 18ft lts and it runs great and he uses it for tournaments in florida...lots of fishing deck. Don't listen to the critics that want you to buy their more expensive boats that always trash mako...all new boats have good warrantys. Years ago my dad bought an 18ft fishmaster and people told him is was a shite boat. He had it for 16 yrs of strictly saltwater, probably boated over 4000 trout and sold it to a guy who uses it now in toledo bend for 17 yrs now and going. Its all in how u upkeep your boat brother.

Tbh , I searched inside and out for what I wanted heavily when I bought mine back in Feb. You not gonna find a decent newer used boat for 20k. You may as well go to 30k with a new boat with a warranty on boat motor and trailer. You will know ur boat and everything will be new. You can finance low notes on 30k for 10 to 20 years if u want...put 20k down, finance 10k....under a 100 a month note for a new boat you trust. Any questions about my journey to finding mine, just ask

There is also the "island bay 18ft" made by Sportsman. You can probably find a 4 or 5 yr old for around 25k but used.

I almost bought Sportsman.

This is when people come in this thread suggesting you get a $40k rig instead when they don’t even have a boat.

I would give this Triton a real hard look. Four stroke power. And under your budget so you could always use the extra money to get any TLC it may need to the trailer or whatever.
Triton Seaflight 15k
ETA: It’s been a seller’s market since the start of Covid. Any good deals that happen to pop up will sell within 24 hrs. So you better have your finances/money ready and move quick when you spot something.

Key West maybe. Not sure what's available right now. Last year was brutal but I lucked Into a Frontier for $22k
Here's a Kenner. Way under budget. Could repower with the extra funds after a while

I'd go at least 20ft.
Bulls bay makes a solid hull basic boat that would be a good choice. If you don't mind aluminum Avid makes a nice boat, the 19ft is a "big" 19ft boat as far as usable deck space goes.
If the etec is in your range and discounted appropriately it isn't a bad motor.

The wiring on the BB leaves a lot to be desired.

I would look for a used Nautic Star; a lot of people own those boats, and so do I.

Lots of bad advice in here.
- 18' is plenty of boat for general louisiana fishing. My favorite that I've fished is kenner 18v. The new 18' frontiers are awesome, but I doubt you find one in your budget since they're so new.
- your budget is definitely workable. I bought a kenner 18v w/ 115 in 2018 for $5k and that boat is not all of a sudden worth $20k. You will have to be patient and have reasonable expectations since the market is so crazy these days.
General things about buying a used boat: dont be scared of a wood core boat. Somebody will come in here trying to scare you away from it. If it doesn't have holes drilled everywhere, soft spots, transom flex its probably good to go. If it looks abused, it probably has been. Electronics do nothing for the value of the boat, so don't get upsold on that. Don't forget the trailer is a big part of this as well,a new one for that size boat will be $4k+ and a boat you can't get to and from the launch is worthless.
The best deals are on boats with blown motors or in serious need of a repower. A good way to get a lot of boat for your money is buying one that needs an engine, and spending some time re-wiring it while you wait for the motor to come in. If you are patient you can buy a $20k hull+trailer and get an engine next year.
Eta: it sounds like these days having an etech is a value purchase also which can be good for you. Thats how I got my current boat affordably and I'm very happy with it so far.

I'm in a similar situation as OP. Want an 18ft boat so I can store at the house and not pay extra to store at a lot. Kenner 18v (not vision) is at the top of the list. Storage is a bit of concern but that's probably true for a lot of the boats this size. I've also run accross some Parker, Maycraft, and C-Hawk 18's that all look like a good fit too.

Buddy of mine just bought a used 2005 SX200 skeeter with a 200 Yamaha, loaded. $5,000.00. With cover and tandem axle trailer. Seats are a bit worn and re sewn, and the hot foot spring broke while we took it out on its inaugural new used boat outing doing around 65mph. That was an eye opener. Carpet had some worn spots but not a deal changer for that price. One owner boat at the time of purchase.
