You realize that's a house cat, right?

Not a single picture of a 'black panther'. Not a single dead one. Not a single gene in cougars capable of making a black one.

LOTS of people who just swear up and down they've seen them though.

Lots of people say they've been anal probed by aliens too.

Posted this in the last black panther thread, but it's good info.

quote:

Are Florida panthers black?
It is a common misconception that Florida panthers are black. They are actually tawny and brown with cream or white colored undersides. Small amounts of black coloring can be found around the face, paws, legs, and tip of tail. Baby panthers are born with black spots that last approximately two months after birth. This is so that their mother can camouflage them better from potential predators.

If Florida panthers aren't black, then what IS a black panther?
There is no species of "black panther." The large black cats seen in zoos or used by media outlets are usually either the black (or melanistic) phase of jaguars or leopards. Some species of wild felines, especially those that are spotted as adults (including bobcats) have melanistic or black color phases. This color phase is unusual. However, there has never been a black or melanistic panther, cougar, or mountain lion documented in the wild or in captivity.

Not trying to be a spammer so no link in this post. There have been documented cases of black bobcats. I even have a picture of one on my website if you just follow the previous link I posted you can find it from there. I also have a picture of a black panther. Video actually. The video is from Alabama.

Do I believe there are black cougars. No but there is without a doubt black panthers. A jag or a leopard both have black genes and both come in black. The video I believe is a black leapord. Probably an escaped pet.

Just recently two gray cougars were born in Florida. They are still cubs so it will be interesting to see what happens to the color as they age. Light gray. Nothing to be confused with black.

About 8 years ago I had a book mark of an online news item that had a video of a big black cat out in California, near the Hurst Mansion. It was without a doubt black and without a doubt a cat. The page no longer exist. I tried to use the wayback machine online to view an archived copy of it but they didn't have that page saved. I did save the still shot to my computer and still have a single fram of the video on my computer. It isn't very clear as it just a single frame and much less convincing than the entire video, which left no doubt about it being big and black and a cat.

Um. That video isn't a black panther. BTW, it's possible that a panther/mountain lion/catamount/whatever just swam in a muddy swamp and would appear black even in daylight, but not actually be black. Consecutive generations of only black leopards would be statistically impossible, and black jags also. No pics, no carcass? Sounds like a ninja cat to me.

I'm not doubting that. My point is, look at how many real bobcats there are out there. Heck, I've seen over 20 just deer hunting. Look at how many reports of black bobcats we see. Almost none. So, you have that, yet it seems like nearly 90% of so called cougar sightings in the South are black? When it's not even genetically possible. Hmmmm....
