I follow Sherburne and other WMA's FB pages. I can't help but read the entertainment gold surrounding the ideology of "public land is for all and no one has a spot". And having hunted a lot in WMAs in the past I have plenty of experience with the sharing dynamics on them.

I agree it is public and it belongs to everyone. I agree you don't own a spot.

What I don't understand is why not go elsewhere when you discover someone is already in an area? If you went to a public park would you and your buddies just start playing basketball on a court with a game already in progress? Isn't it common courtesy and respect to give the hunter his space?

Thats the way it should be done when possible. You also have many situations where 1 parking lot or trail head is the entrance to hundreds of acres of land. The idea that 1 or 2 trucks at a parking spot means you shouldn't go in is not logical as well

Most people lack common courtesy and respect for others these days.

People are retarded, I’ve gone to other areas when I knew someone was in my general planned hunting area. Sucks, especially if a great spot, but not worth being a dork about it, have multiple spots, go somewhere else. People that get outraged about hunting and fishing take it in the arse.

Yes but some people think if their truck is parked at the entrance to a trail/road that they have that whole section of woods to themselves

I walked past a guy hunting on the ground 100 yards from his truck on a woods road He was mad as hell I was walking past him. I was well over 1/2 mile from him where I was hunting

And don’t get me started on turkey hunters that stand beside their truck and owl hoot with the truck lights on and the door chime going off thinking they have that section to themselves

I foresee more and more quota hunts in the future, especially with more and more people getting priced out of rising lease costs every year. Eventually the WMA's will be over run, if not already. The one closest to me in GA has already closed and is quota (lottery) only.

Now a boom scouter will get me irate. When you shoot ducks one day and someone hears it and slips in there the next before you I have all but quit public land duck hunting because of it.

The dude who is doing most of the griping about it in that group hunts 100 yards from his truck.

I see that at Tunica hills. Someone hunting the ATV trail and looking at me crazy when I drive by. Set up in the woods away from trails if you don’t want to be bothered. I guess they see a deer track in the mud hole and figure they’ll hunt that deer and everyone else can use another trail. Silly arse people.

Most just don’t have any common sense.
I haven’t hunted public in almost 20yrs but one of my last hunts at buckhorn WMA which me an my brother ended up killing legal bucks.
I had posted up in my climber about ~350-400off of a road, down a tree edge and at about 5mins before shooting light I see a headlight coming towards me from where I had walked in. I proceed to flash my light at the guy who responded by flashing his light back at me. He proceeded to walk 150 -200yards past me and sit on the ground dead in my scent cone with me observing the finger that was most likely to have a deer come out.
Dude would have been pissed if I shot one at a 45degree angle dead in line with him but out of his view.

First come, first serve... It ain't hard.

Some guys get butt hurt because someone beat them to "their" spot and ruin it for everyone.

I don't hunt public land but when I am fishing and someone else is in "my spot" where I planned to fish I just go to another spot... again, it ain't hard.

I've heard of a few high noon showdowns in some green tree reservoirs and surrounding flooded area. I was told it wasn't so much shooting at each other but above each other. Just be safe and courteous and be cognizant that there are idiots out there.

I have a friend out west that has near 100 acres and he didn't even get tags for deer on his property this year... that is nuts to me. Its a lottery to even get tags for your own damn back yard.

That is absurd. If you dont mind me asking, what state is doing that?

Sherburne is probably the worst place for finding you a “spot” unless you go water route. Otherwise pull down their flagging tape. It has some good opportunities, but you have to get off the beaten path.

Hunters just need to talk more. For some reason, some guys get so weird when I ask them where they are going when we are in the parking lot getting ready to head into the woods.

I'm not trying to steal your spot. I'm simply trying to make sure we are not going to be right on top of each other.

Most of the time, there is only 1 or 2 other guys hunting "my block" and we all know where each other hunts because we have been hunting that block for years together.

The only issue I ever have are the coonasses with crossbows that love to come up for a weekend and "slip around" at 8 am

I hunt Missouri Public. I go out of my way to avoid others, but sometimes it cant be helped. Especially if they set up on a route that is used to access an area. Get off the damn trail! I would say 90% of the "hunters" up here do NOT want to put in the effort to be successful on public land.

This is true. Almost all the Conservation Areas here in Missouri are "managed Hunts" You enter to get drawn. They limit the # in attempts to provide a good hunting experience. Good think about MO, is there are a lot of places you can do public that don't require applying for a spot.

This is what always gets me when these discussions pop up. I have a handful of spots scouted on every piece of public I hunt, and I'm not afraid to change plans and hunt one of those if I can't hunt my first choice.

I'm not going to get bent out of a shape that someone beat me to a spot. I DO, however, get bent out of shape when someone does something stupid, like drive down a closed road in Kisatchie--right past my truck--when someone is clearly hunting that area. I've never had an issue with someone setting up within ear shot of me, but that would get me pretty fired up as well.

It's just called decency--and some people just aren't decent human beings. Part of me wishes they would just go to all draw hunts on weekends to put an end to this crap. If you're having that problem during the week, then people are just being assholes at that point, because there is way less pressure during the week.
