Fertilizer for Centipede and Bermuda
Posted by SportTiger1 on 4/21/17 at 6:01 pm00
My yard is basically 30% Cent/ 70% bermuda. Is there a formula i can use on both that would be worth a damn, or do i need to get two separate numbers?
Last year i used 8/8/8 and the centipede did well, but it didnt help the bermuda much at all. I was thinking about trying 13/13/13 this year.
Can centipede handle that?

You realize the difference between those two is that one has more filler and less fertilizer? Type of grass has nothing to do with which one. Grass is grass and grass loves fertilizer.
You're ok to hit a "complete" the first app then I use 33-0-0 after that.

Ive been told for years that centipede doesn't do well when loaded up with nitrogen. And phosphorus messes with the iron levels.
Is that not true?

exactly...go with something that has less nitrogen (the first number). if you really want to make things look nice, throw out some ironite. I did this last year and my centipede yard looked great. the ironite is a little pricey, though.

Awesome. Thank you sir. Co-op is out of 888 right now anyway.

Yes, more than 1# of nitrogen or so per acre in a single growing season will onset Centipede decline. On the other hand, bermuda loves nitrogen. I sometimes use pure urea to fertilize ball fields when I'm in need of growth and color boost.

My experiences with grass have been from having a cattle/hay operation (300 head at one time), and maintaining city softball fields. Neither had centipede so that could be true.
There can be too much, as with anything.
To the poster who said 1lb per year, that's hard to believe. Not saying it's not true but in pastures we would put 200 lbs per acre so hard for me to wrap my head around that low number.

I said 1 pound of nitrogen per acre....Not 1 pound of fertlizer per acre. There is a decent amount of math involved in calibrating active ingredient per acre.
200 pounds of 13-13-13 fertilizer and 200 pounds of 38-0-0 (urea) are putting down VASTLY different amounts of nitrogen.
Calculations Used to Determine the Amount of Fertilizer Needed to Treat Turf

Good suggestion. I have Centipede for my home lawn, and I use Holganix. It's also a microbial nitrogen.
ETA: it stinks to high hell, though

If you want that centipede to do well get the time release Lesco brand 15-0-15. I think Home Depot and John Deer stores are the only ones that sell it. Centipede does not like much of that middle number nor does it like more than 15% of the first number which is nitrogen.
Bermuda prefers high nitrogen like 29% but that Lesco 15-0-15 will make it grow.
That Lesco is time released by each individual pellet and will work for 90 days. I put it on my grass 2-3 times during a growing season starting in mid march. Usually I feed every 60-70 days.
In theory that centipede will choke out the bermuda. I once had a yard hydromulched and the Bermuda came on strong the first few years but the slow growing centipede eventually thickened up and now that yard is 100% centipede.
That stuff that is like 8-8-8 and 13-13-13 is not time released most of the time. It's cheaper and works good for about a month. But that Lesco goes strong for many months thus making your yard stay greener and healthier for longer. It's more money on the front end but it sure works. It also comes with 3% iron in the bag which helps green the grass up. That Lesco is probably the best fertilizer I've ever tried and I've tried them all. It's professional type quality.

Earthquake is right. Centipede uses 15-0-15. And since ironite is so expensive, you can get the liquid iron (Sunniland) for really cheap and put it in your hose end sprayer to apply. Then water in. We use the iron for greening when it is too hot to apply fertilizer. Good luck.

Thanks all. My centipede pretty much always looks good she there I fert or not. The Bermuda is just a mess.

Where can you buy the Sunniland brand of iron? I've used the Ironite brand that you hook to the hose and it was kind of expensive.
I've used Milorganite in the summer to keep the yard greened up but it doesn't make it grow from nitrogen. Works great when it's dog day hot outside because you don't have to mow it like crazy from dumping nitrogen based fertilizer on it and it won't burn your grass up. I always cut the grass taller also so the roots grow deeper and thus less watering. It's really an awesome compliment to your fertilizer and iron. LINK

Jefferson farm and feed sells fertilome products. I use 15-0-15 on my front yard that's completely zoysia, back is st Aug and centipede and it gets same thing. They also make that dose in weed and feed with atrizine.
