Experienced dog/drive hunters please help settle an argument on pickets

I say that a pickett, post or the hunters that are posted at certain spots waiting on the dogs or drivers to flush deer toward them have to remain in place and almost never leave their position once hunt starts unless they tell the people around them so they don’t accidentally get shot. As I was taught my my grandfather.
My friend says people move around all the time without telling anyone else and it’s common to do so.
That seems nuts to me but what the hell do I know, what say ye?

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Probably better for the outdoor board if you want real answers.

It usually depended on if there was enough people in place to cut the deer off, we often made drives short handed and would sort of move around as the need warranted.

Ran dogs way back in the day. You should stick to your designated spot until the hunt is over.
Secondly, bucks slip around after the dogs leave. Gotta be patient.

Personally, I don't think I'd go hunting with you.

Last club I was in, your drew your stand number and you stayed your arse put until the hunt was over.

Stay put….if anyone wanders they create a gap in standers that the deer will go through.

Yes and no.
Some drives dictate that you should stay where you are told to get and if you are not an experienced dog hunter you should definitely stay where you are told get. But if you are short on standards and you know what you are doing it's ok to move around just say where you are going on the CB.
We have a few that think they are the only ones that should chase the dogs and don't want anyone leaving their stand. I can't do that so I'm not running with them anymore. I'll just still hunt on my stands.

We stay put unless the dogs are getting out of the block and someone needs help catching them. We all have walkie talkies and know when somebody moves. Plus we’re all on 4 wheelers or side by sides, so you can hear them crank up. Nobody just wanders around.

Impossible. “ Still “ hunting is not sitting “ still “ on a stand. “ Still “ hunting is moving slowly and alertly while the hunter is moving.
“ Still “ hunting = moving. “ Stand “ hunting = sitting, standing or fricking in a stationary stand.
Have done all of the above.

I thought that was slip hunting?

Most have cellphone or 2way radio to communicate during hunts. No reason not to tell someone you're on the move.
I don't use dogs, and I wont stalk through a public area if hounders are around. I wear plenty of orange even on my own property because I border NF dog running areas.

I have hunted coons, grouse, ducks, and rabbits with dogs. Never deer.
The meat on a deer is not nasty with a strong game flavor after being rammed by dogs?

I don’t know where this started, but the meat does not taste any different to me.

No difference in the meat. And I've killed and eaten a bunch
of deer killed both ways.
One another safety note about dog hunting...we all stand up against the tree line of the block of woods the dogs are in and wait to shoot at the deer until it crosses the lane/pipeline/road or whatever you're standing on. That way you are swinging your gun away from and shooting behind the next stander. We have a safety meeting every morning before we hunt if we have any guests or people that don't hunt with us every weekend and don't know the rules.
