Experience Gift for an 8 Year OldPosted by CaptainJ47
on 2/18/21 at 10:56 pm

Ok seeking the board’s advice. I have an old soul of a nephew about to be 8 years old. Kid is the epitome of a coonass... hell I think he has two boats already (one with a 7.5hp and forgot the other one). He goes fishing with his dad every chance he gets and lives in cammo gear. He doesn’t need more stuff. So for his birthday I would love to get him some sort of “experience”. Live in Ascension parish but with COVID I am assuming Cabela’s and Bass Pro may not be doing interactive type events. Anyone have any recommendations for activities to do with him or buy for him and his dad for his birthday? Thanks board.

Airboat swamp tour? Wait until the gator hatch and he can see plenty of them. Maybe get a picture holding a juvenile if he’s lucky.

Thanks for the suggestion. He has a camp on Belle river so gets to see some but I don’t think he has done a swamp boat before. I will certainly add this to the list of things to look up.

Maybe take him on a charter trip for something he doesn't typically get to catch? Would be fun for both of you. Not sure what you're wanting to spend though, so that may be a bit much.

I’ve never been, but have seen a swim with otters experience advertised at barnhill preserve located in Ethel, la. Also has a sloth encounter.

Bow fishing trip with Marsh Masters or similar. If he doesn't have the gear they'll supply some.

Offshore trip, not sure if he can handle a tuna trip yet, but definitely a rig fishing snapper trip when the season opens.

Skeet range, or sporting clays if he handles a shotgun.

Orvis has Fly Fishing lessons for free! You even get a discount on gear. Would be fun for the three of you to learn to fly fish.
*They may not be offering right now due to cold weather but you could call the shop and ask when the next available day is.
Get the young a baw a three weight and he will have a ball getting after bass, bream, and crappie.

You could take his fishing poles and lay them in the back of the truck, schooling him on proper rod transport techniques.
You could inform him on why he needs to get stronger to absorb the recoil of a .338 when he’s hunting 120lbs does on your state park camp/hunting trip.
Or you could sit him down in front of his computer and show him why optics planet sucks shipping, exposing him to the bright world of customer service at a quality company like midway USA.

Instead of a one-time experience, maybe get him a lifetime hunting and fishing license if he doesn't already have one.
If he's 8 years old, for $300 you can give him hunting and fishing for the rest of his life without dealing with the state every year. The only thing he'd have to pay for on the hunting side would be federal duck stamps if he duck hunts. Basic, Big game, Bow, Primitive, WMA, and state duck and turkey stamps are included in the hunting side.
Basic and saltwater are included on the fishing side. He'd only have to pay more if he wants to use gear like traps or trawls.
He wouldn't even have to worry about carrying a LDWF license. You can have the lifetime endorsement put right on the driver's license and that's all you'd ever need to show Greenjeans.
