As much as I hate the hike, I’ve been hunting WMAs that aren’t easily accessible. The trade off is if I kill something I’m dragging it out. But at least I don’t have to worry about that because there just isn’t much traffic.

Similar thing happened to me and my hunting buddy in the Sabine. We went in...set up our dekes and were in the process of pulling up some grass on the island we planned on hunting...and some yahoos came in and set up across the pond from us...we hollered at them to let them know where we were...shined our light at them etc. Now Sabine NWR HAS a rule saying no hunting within 150 yards of another party.

During the hunt there were multiple times we rained them and they rained us with steel shot. Not skybusting...legitimate shots by our side after ducks had flared and we were shooting the doubles.

Long story short: We turned in their plates because they parked right behind us...and although I have no idea what happened...the game warden knew who we were because of my dad...he kinda messed with us a bit while checking our ducks etc...but he got REAL serious when we told him what we had experienced....so there is that.

Next Sunday? Deer firearm season opens on most WMA's on Thanksgiving weekend. I would avoid all of those WMA's.

If either sex deer is open normally on a WMA all other hunting is closed...

The WMA that I'm going to hunt squirrels in has an entire area, not attached to the main part of the WMA, that is dedicated wholly to small game. You think that would be closed too? I'm being lazy, I should probably just read the regs anyway.

Indeed. Didn't even know it existed until I was browing onX the other day and saw it.

There might be a few squirrels but it is managed for quail. LDWF recently thinned about 1/2 of that area 750 acres. It has a couple of pine stands separated by 75 yard wide paths.

Really?! Texas has literally a million acres of public hunting land.

bullshite. Show me where I can hunt a deer on public land this week in Texas.

Almost every single acre of the state WMAs is restricted to dove hunting only. All other “public” land required a draw to hunt and your odds are terrible. Please enlighten me if I’m wrong, but saying “Texas has a million acres of public hunting land” isn’t accurate or honest.

Texas lands are 95% private, check it if you dont believe me, and the remaining 5% is tightly restricted. Texas is the worst state In the country for public, do-it-yourself Hunters. The state has done a masterful job propagandizing the wealth of game for private profit though, so you are forced to drop $3-5k, per season for a lease or as much for a single guided hunt - that is Texas hunting.

Thanks for the info. I'm not so much concerned with what I can take as I am to get some time in the woods. Work has been stressful lately, so I need to get out there.

I am pretty sure all that is closed for deer hunting the long weekend after Thanksgiving. Read the hunting regulations.

Good deal, I'll be out there this weekend, so I should be fine. In any event, I'll have read the regs before I make the trip out there.

If you're bowhunting public land in a place where an "old boy" squirrel hunting can carry a 5-gal bucket to your stand my first thought would be you aren't bow hunting in the best place. Unless you were Dan Infalt beast-style hunting the parking lot, in which case I retract my statement.

There are over a million acres of whitetail hunting within 2-3 hours of my house in East Texas. Hill country is another story....less land there for public hunting.

Sam Houston National Forrest/WMA - 200k acres
Alabama Creek WMA - 40k acres
Angelena/Neches Dam WMA - 4k acres
Bannister WMA - 40k acres (where I hunt when I want to go public)
Moores Plantation WMA - 43k acres
Big Thicket + Sabine National Forrest - i don't even know
N Toledo Bend WMA - 500 acres

And there are literally hundreds of 3-5k acre WMAs all throughout East Texas up to Dallas and into North Texas.

It's all on Texas Parks & Wildlife Website....educate yourself instead of bitching

But there are several very large WMAs in ETX that hold some pretty nice deer.

So if it’s not the “best place” it’s ok to sit and hunt next to other hunters? Thought I made that clarification already.

You may be surprised of the deer activity close to roads and parking areas in some instances as well.

I wish I had dan’s skills.

You are either so full of shite your eyes are brown, or you are lazy arse that can't work a computer. Instead of running your mouth like a bitchy keyboard warrior, take a look at the TPWD website. To say I'm inaccurate or dishonest when you don't have a fricking clue about what you speak, tell me volumes. Now get your candy arse off here an pick up the Annual Public Hunting Guide. For less than $50 a year, you have access to HUGE hunting areas. What part of the state do you live in?

well that escalated rather quickly, might have been smarter to agree with him and not have to deal with him somewhere out in god's creation, like findng your spot and setting up 50-100 yards from it, just sayin...

It aggravated me a bit.

If he would not have come across like an arse, he MAY have gotten some great tips and hunting spots. I rarely deer hunt anymore.

What the old squirrel hunter did was not okay, but he either (1) doesn't know any better, or (2) doesn't care, both of which are things you have to accept when hunting public land.

What I was really saying is that you need to be back up in the shite where the big boys are bedded if you want to hunt public. I'm not at all surprised of deer activity close to roads and parking lots. I hunt them plenty with activity is low. But for the most part when hunting public, as a bow hunter I get back in the mess, nasty, deep stuff. That's exactly what Dan does most of the time. I have leases and farmland to hunt, but I love hunting beast-style and often try out ideas on public land. If you're a mile back in the shite, very unlikely you'll see many people.
