I’ve been hunting only public land for about 14-15 years now. Can’t tell you how many times people have walked up on me. It’s going to happen. It’s going to piss you off. There’s nothing you can do but either stay and continue to hunt, or leave... I have a video on my phone of a doe, she bolts, an old man and I assume his grandson come walking by. It was like 7am. Another time I had 3 people walking toward me, about 150 yards in front of me they started splitting off. 2 of them went to my left, one of them went to my right, they ended up behind me. I heard them start shooting not far behind me. One of them killed an 8pt, the other killed a 10pt. They walked by me at like 7:30am. Ended up being that the 2 people that went one direction was a guy and his girlfriend. Apparently his girlfriend didn’t feel like waking up that morning so they got to the woods at 7 and started walking around. It was so arse chapping that my hunting group and I waited for them so we could at least ask why the hell they were walking through the woods at that time of morning. We couldn’t tell them anything but by our tones, i feel like they got the message that we weren’t happy about them messing up our hunt.

There’s only so much you can do when it’s an adult. Just gotta deal with it.

My experiences on public land are limited to turkey hunting, and most of the time people are respectful. There was this one chap a couple years back that rode a bicycle 30mph through the woods towards a turkey I was calling and spooked him two fridays in a row. The third Friday I never called to the turkey and he flew down before ever gobbling. I got close to him and called one time and he strutted on over and I killed him as I heard the bicycle coming down the forest road. I got out to the road and his bike was there but the dude was nowhere in sight. I rode his bike back to his truck (which was parked right next to mine). Loaded it up for him and left him a tail feather as a thank you.

Deal with it or get further back.

Last year at sherburne I tried during bow season on a Monday. Only a couple of vehicles on the whole wma. I was on the north end on a small finger of woods about 400 yards in. A dude parked his car 10 yards from mine and set up 100 yards from me. He knew I was there

Hunt public land in the western states.
The coullion per square mile quotient is extremely low.

A lot of these folks don’t want to scout. They just show up and walk in some spot they’ve walked in for years. It’s crazy to me. After several weeks of guys setting up in the timber so close you can hear conversations and them loading their guns, I was done with that whole area of the wma.

Found a wma map and stayed on google maps. I found the most secluded access points I could and scouted so many random areas. Ended up finding several holes with little to no pressure.

As bad as it is at least you don’t live in Texas. Zero public land and a minimum of $3K to get on a lease of any quality. I’ve lived/hunted all over the country and Texas is by far the worst state for hunting and it is not even remotely close...even communist New York was markedly better.

The worst two things for public land hunting is duck commanders and social media. One limit of ducks in a spot turns into half of the baton rouge area trying to hunt Sherburne, etc.

If you hunt public land long enough, it is going to happen.

I think the worse was when a guy climbed a tree literally right next to me in a lottery hunt on Lake Ophelia. He told me "I'll hunt this way, you hunt that way".

I just looked at him with utter amazement but pretty much had to agree with the arrangement as it was already getting daylight and I didn't want to just abandon the hunt.

Duck hunting but where doesn't matter. We got to our spot first then some jagaloon came and setup 50 yards away from us about an hour after we got there. Shined flashlights and yelled but no acknowledgement. I think what it boils down to is people don't scout. They just wake up one Saturday and decide they goin hunt. Really annoying but unfortunately nothing anyone can do to stop them.

This happens to me all the time and I can’t understand it. I try to get away as far away from people but others seem to be drawn to your light like a moth. We will bang the sides of the boat with the paddle so they get a sense of how close they are but to no avail.

it’s no fun to hunt next to somebody and you’re both calling at the same ducks. And then they sky bust the ducks. It doesn’t do anybody any good. Why go through the effort to just set up next to someone? It just blows my mind.

Yeah, it was crazy. When we got down he said that he didn't know what to do because his climber was already on that tree. He had put his climber up the afternoon before. I didn't see it in the dark when I was setting up.

He seemed like a nice enough guy, just an awkward situation

Really?! Texas has literally a million acres of public hunting land.

I'm going to hunt a small game area in a WMA for squirrels on Sunday morning. How bad is that going to be?

This Sunday? Shouldn't be too bad.

Next Sunday? Deer firearm season opens on most WMA's on Thanksgiving weekend. I would avoid all of those WMA's.
