Been seeing a big 8 point at my lease in northern Louisiana for the past 2 months or so. Has me so excited that I will be bow hunting for the first time ever this year just to try and get this big guy.

Any tips for a first time bow hunter and hunting this early in the year? I typically don't hunt until rifle season opens.

Play the wind right or don't hunt.

Only feed on the ground and use rice bran.

Game camera is your friend.

Practice shooting similar to what you will face on your stand. Use a range finder.

Practice holding your draw for long periods of time to build up your strength. You may have to come to full draw and hold your shot for a long time before he gives you an opportunity to release.

Practice. You're gonna be sick if you been watching that deer for 2 months and then miss or gut shoot it.

There are a lot of squirrel hunters on my lease, any idea how this might affect the bucks movement? Typically nobody is bow hunting up there so I am not sure what to expect as to how it will affect him.

No way to know fro sure, be he won't like it. Try to convince them to stay away from where you believe he's bedding.

sucks.. he's going nocturnal

you usually have a week or two to get them before the start noticing bowhunting pressure. Squirrel hunters aren't worried about that and will push the deer into hiding

Bow season starts tomorrow in Georgia.

OP: practice shooting, holding draw, and making a slight whistle all at the same time. Much much different than rifle. Good luck

What about doe scent and things like that? Should I do all the same things I would do in November?

This. This is so key. You fudge up and hunt him on the wrong wind, and you may never see that deer again. He will completely change his travel pattern.

I don't think doe scent helps this early. If you have mineral licks, you may wanna stay close. Deer are still using them regularly early in the season.

are you basing that off of his travel path?

Wind direction in relation to which wind to hunt? If that's what you mean basing it off his travel path, then correct. It all depends on the OP's set up. If he set his ladder up based off of sign in a particular area, or if he is hunting a feeder/food plot, or if he is hunting based of a known travel corridor. Stand placement in relation to what source you are hunting should depend on a few things, one of those being the predominant wind for that area. When you know that, you can use that in correlation with the source you are hunting, and then decide where to place your stand.

Doing that will help some with the winds... but certain things like cold fronts, etc. can obviously change the normal winds for his area. In those cases, if the wind has changed and is "hurting you" so to speak, then there is no way I would take the chance of hunting a bad wind while I'm hunting a buck. Like I said, he gets any whiff of you, and you can likely kiss his arse goodbye for the remainder of the season.

Can't hurt I guess but I it depends on your target. B&C bucks are freakishly smart, so if that's what you're after you need to take everyday advantage. I've had younger deer damn near walk up to my stand/feeder even though they most likely could hear and smell me. They're just younger and predictable.

I am fairly confident he is a 2-3 year old deer. I hope he isn't that savvy. Haha
At this point I'm keeping the corn there and staying away.
I have to clear a shooting lane next weekend but that is it until the season opens.

Squirrel hunters will definitely keep the deer moving, that may mess with your plan to kill the one you have been watching, but will definitely present you with other opportunities that you wouldn't have had. First deer I killed with bow was on opening day of squirrel season. Had heard a shot minutes before my kill, deer had come from direction of shot. Good luck!!

Aim further back on a deer than what you do with a rifle if you get a chance to shoot one. I've learned the hard way that an arrow will not penetrate the shoulder blade. Lost a cull spike a couple years ago, and a 168" non typical that got killed during rifle season with my swhacker in his shoulder last year.

I'm ready for some cold weather. I can't even fathom deer hunting until it cools off.
