I am a sonar idiot that would like to not be one day. Trying to decide how to set up new boat. I see lots of guys with two units at the console and many with two at the bow. How important is this really? Should they be the same size?

I have tried running two at the console but I find it to burdensome to try to control both units at the same time at least if you are running sonar or structural imaging on both. I have set up a mount for my ipad to run my mapping on and all sonar on my live 12. To me it works out a lot easier and a iPad is way cheaper than another head unit for mapping. So no they don't need to be the same size.

Up front the only way I would need two units is if I was running 360 or live sight/whatever Garmin calls theirs which I don't. I have one 12 inch unit for mapping, down and side imaging and it is plenty for the type of fishing I do.

Yes, I download and subscribe to the app. It is cheaper than getting the 99 dollar subscription to update my card. I can pay I think 14 dollars for the same thing. I use my map on the HDS for getting where I am going and marking waypoints etc so I can see them on the front unit.

I am old school obviously but I think folks pay too much attention to electronics. Mine will alert me when I get a phone call....WTF???? I go fishing to get away from the phone....I have been on folks boats when they spent more time staring at monitors than they do fishing....screw that....I am of the opinion that the first part of catching a fish is to have bait in the water. I have caught a lot of fish on waters I knew nothing at all about without any kind of machine. I have found reefs offshore with nothing more than an AM radio back in the day....if it was hazy or there wasn't anyway to triangulate something on the hill I'd be out of luck but I could still find my way back to the hill.

I can certainly understand someone who is earning a living fishing, either tournaments, guiding or commercially, would need every advantage available and would have the screen time needed to understand their technology and use it to the apex advantage....most recreational fisherman do not have the time or resources to utilize the incredible technology that is available....unless they spend more time learning to utilize it and less time actually fishing.

I would prefer fishing to fricking around with a computer....it can make a huge difference in catching, I am not disputing that, to me its a question of what I want to be doing on a boat...fishing or looking for fish...and I am pretty satisfied with fishing.....

I'd bet the majority of boats with 2 units at the console and at the bow had an owner who upgraded to new transducers and kept the older model for backup mainly but more because they knew how to use it. It may make sense to have multiple units of the same type to keep one image on one screen and another image on another but only if you are really into staring at technology....for me part of the allure of fishing is getting away from what I do for a living.....

I get all that, but on the bodies of water I fish, the summer is close to impossible without this knowledge. I want to learn so I can stop avoiding summer altogether.

If it were me, and I barely know how to drive a boat, much less work the electronics, I'd get one at the console and one at the bow. The one at the console mostly for GPS, then change the screen to show graphing once the boat is stopped and you are fishing. The one at the bow would be set to show whatever underwater information you want pretty much all the time. But I don't know shite about shite, so take it for whats its worth.

I'm thinking about getting a GPS/Fish finder for my boat, mainly for the GPS function. I had one with no GPS previously, but I broke the transducer recently when changing my trolling motor and the transducer costs almost as much as the unit itself, so I just removed it.

Which reminds me, if any of you would like a free Lowrance Hook 4X with a transducer that is cracked where you attached it to the boat or trolling motor, hit me up.

And that's me right now. Wanting to do more...I guess.

I have a helix 10 at the console and wish I had another one. Either that or I wish I has a helix 12. Ideally I want to be running my map, SI and DI while idling.

Yes.

OK. Assuming I have two 9s and a 12, where do I put them? Mixed at console, or two 9s at console and 12 at bow?

I would do :

9 at console to run map
12 at console for SI & DI
9 at bow.

Or sell the 2 9's and buy a 12

I'm getting no consensus on this which makes me feel good that I cannot screw it up. The expensive arse mount I just bought will take either to 9s or a 9 and 12.

there is no doubt they can make a HUGE difference....the difference in making bait with side scanning sonar and without is game changing....run up to a buoy, look at it with the sonar, and either make bait or go to the next one...it sounds like you have a situation where sonar could be game changing and a reason to make the effort to learn how to use it properly....that is a good reason to do as much as you can afford, in my opinion.

I am so anal that it would drive me nuts having different size units together.

Where does one get this stuff installed? I’m too dumb to do it myself. I’ve been thinking about graphs and may pull the trigger this year.

My brother and I did mine. If I had to take it to somebody I would probably use superior trolling motor.

It really is easy to do though.

I have one 12” Hummingbird at the console. I have a 9” Hummingbird and a 12” Garmin double stacked on the bow. I use the console for mapping and imaging. I use the bow Hummingbird for maps, waypoints and traditional graph while using the Garmin for LiveScope only.
