Dog question (heart worms)

I recently 'acquired' a 5 or 6 year old black lab, he has never had any heartworm treatment. Is it too late to start?

The dog needs to be tested at the vets office to know if he currently has them or not.

This. If he is heart worm free, you can start.

Thanks. Didn't know there was a test. Is it complicated? Expensive?
Any options if he is positive?

Should be a very quick blood test, but the dog probably needs shots and a full examination. Expect to pay around $150.
There are options if the dog is positive. What they do is kill the worms slowly over a period of time, if the worms are killed all at once, then the dead worms will collect in the heart and kill the dog.

If he does have heartworm then ask your vet to get you some Ivermectin. It's a liquid form of the ingredient in Heartguard. You give the dog .75cc every 15 days. A bottle won't cost you $30 and will last over a year. I just inject it on to his food and he scarfs it down.
I live all around farms and minnow ponds and a regular monthly pill isn't enough and my lab still got heartworms. This was the option my vet wanted to go with. This is the monthly preventative and giving every 15 days is enough to slowly kill off the existing heartworms and prevent the dog from getting more.

If youre in BR, AVS on greenwell spring is a quality, affordable vet. Good people. They can take care of everything.

If you're in Louisiana and the dog is that old, you can almost guarantee the dog is HW+
The Mississippi River delta region is the worst place in the country for HW's.
Like other posters have stated, you will have to have the dog tested before administering any preventative. If the dog is +, then you will have to talk to your vet about treatment options.
Good luck!

Heart transplant.
Human heart into a dog's heart.

That is a different dosage than I have heard for ivomex. It works though. I use it.
Heartwork test was 16 bucks last time I did one.

I use Ivermec as my monthly heartworm treatment for two labs. I give .10CC for every ten pounds.

+1 on the Ivomec
We resucued a Pit/Lab mix a few years ago that nearly died his heartworms were so bad. Vet and a good friend of mine nursed him back to health before we got him.
Now I give him .5 cc (the .10/10lb.) guide about once a month- sometimes I forget. He's been clear for 2 years now.
Thank God someone rescued his poor arse- he's made the best kid dog ever and kinda acts like he would track a deer if he had to.

That makes sense. My dog weighs 75 lbs and his dosage is .75cc.
