Seems like I never hear about it in south Louisiana.

I’ve tried but think I just scare everything off.
All I do use is the doe in a can and grunt call.

Use the heck out of it in Texas, but only during rut. It takes the right ratio of competition for does to get bucks aggressive enough to respond. .

Not in LA or most of the south besides prime area, like Giles Island etc. We use a lot up north in Wisconsin, Missouri.

I don’t rattle...hunt around Liberty MS.

Come to think of it, I’ve been hunting for 20 years and have never seen or heard bucks fight, never heard of my hunting buddies having heard/seen it either.

They’ve got to fight some though bc you’ll shoot a buck every now and then that’s been through the ringer or has a few tines broken off.

I only ever use a grunt tube in MS. Despite seeing them fighting several times, I've always felt like I wasn't doing any good rattling.

They fight down here but not often very rarely are vocal. Go up north or prime areas and you will a holy shite moment.

I don’t do much calling, and even less rattling here in southern Iowa. Always had better luck without it.

I did grunt in a buck once 15 years ago (god damn time flies) in Centerville. Saw him walking away from me through the woods about 80 yards away. Made one or two soft grunts and turned and walked a straight line towards me. He wasn’t running and didn’t seemed like he was agitated, just curious. Ended up shooting him at about 10 steps. Only time I know of a grunt call working for me. I still use it on occasion but not too much

Yep. If you time it right it’s a blast. I took this video rattling years ago, if you have them fooled they’ll come in right on top of you.

Yes. Set up where the buck will have to show himself before he can smell you. I use real antlers and prefer to be on the ground.

Miller Man

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would imagine that was roughly a 140-ish 3 1/2-4 1/2 year old deer?

My God to hunt a place where you pass on bucks like that.... (I know, he's not fully mature...but Jeez man
)

Yes, it works and it will work everywhere. I call in dozens every year in different states at different times of the year.

Oh, and don’t do it on the ground. Big buck came in hot and pissed two years ago go within 20 feet of me and I suddenly realized that I didn’t think this whole rattling on the ground out. I was working on a big buck hung up 100 yards behind me that probably heard me come in, and this one came out of no where. Stopped around and circled me for at least 5 minutes. I could not blink. Then the other buck starting snorting at him. Could have taken him when he got off me but I wanted to see the other deer first. They went down about 200 yards and banged heads but I could not get a clear shot.

Anyway, I think if that buck had seen those horns I would have been in deep shite. Hard to get a rifle up and shot st a charging buck 10 yards away.

Just be careful. Called in 6 in a row last year during pre rut. Shooter came in late.

Listen to podcast on calling, I like to use the can and grunts and wheezes and then throw in rattling every 30 minutes.

You don’t have to be library quiet in the woods, just don’t sound un natural. (Cough, cell phone, etc) They will smell you first, see you second, hear you last.

Just like us, they see movement. But their damn nose is their primary sense. It’s almost impossible to beat.

I have called and rattled in deer in SW Mississippi. I don't do it much anymore for some reason.

How I did it:
I would never rattle because it is making noise. Always been a no-no when deer hunting. However I had read a lot about how it works in various articles. So what I did was wait until I saw a small buck that I wasn't going to shoot. Then I would rattle to see how it responded. I had both does and bucks respond favorably to it.

One buck was walking away from me and when I grunted at him. Not a look. Grunt again. Didn't look. Loud arse grunt, finally he at least looks in my direction (about 40 yards). Then I rattle. He turns and starts running directly to me. Then he stops and starts circling. I guess he realized he might be about to get his arse kicked. haha

I have always seemed to get a stronger response to rattling than with a grunt call. I have had bucks run in after using a grunt call but often they ignore it.

Timing with the rut is important I would think. So I never rattle early in the season.
