Does anyone hunt with buckshot anymore?
Growing up, we always threw 00 buckshot in a 12 gauge and hit the woods. Seems these days, everyone needs a 300+ yard tack driving rifle to hit a deer.
In Louisiana, most shots seem well under 100 yards.
Seems buckshot would be better for shooting at deer in brushy areas.

One place I hunt at has a shotgun only area but you can only use slugs. No buckshot.

The only thing I have buckshot for is self defense shells.

I still do occasionally. Federal flite control has changed the game. Its never better than a rifle with a low power scope. Sometimes I just like toting a shotgun instead, but its never better than a rifle.

Weird flex on buckshot.

The only time I carry buckshot is in case I see a hog while squirrel hunting.

Having killed a few deer on the run with a rifle and missing a few with buckshot on the run, I've basically regulated it to nothing but "because I feel like it" use when deer hunting. I've never been in a situation where I had a rifle with a 2x scope and wanted for buckshot, but I have been in the opposite situation many times.

It does have a few merits. Its safer than a rifle since the effective range is so much less. Shotguns are generally easier to tote than scoped rifles. Its very effective at killing deer within its range. Dumptruck loads of big giant bucks have been killed with it.

I think it used to be so prominent mainly becuase guns were expensive, rifles were very expensive, and buckshot allowed a man to deer hunt with what he had. He could hunt everything from birds to deer with one gun and many of the old men I knew did have only one gun when they started out. It worked fine for them so they stuck with it their whole life.

I personally think what you shoot with the shot defines the real name, not the name defining what you should shoot with it. I for instance own a box of beavershot.

The 8 point on my wall I killed with Buckshot. I didn't have a deer rifle at the time, poor college kid and my college roommate was trying to get me into hunting. He let me borrow his shot gun and I smoked a doe and a nice 8 point in my first few hunts using Buckshot.

One place we hunt has bow and shotgun seasons(no slugs). We have had good success with 12 ga. 3” Federal 4B buckshot out of a turkey choke on hogs and deer.

I usually use a 12 or 20 ga cause I hunt piney SC woods. I use buckshot and slugs, just depends on what I have around.

All I’ve ever used here in texas (hill country) is a 20 gauge slug gun.
Im accurate up to about 100 yards with it. Hadn’t had a deer run more then 100 yards at the furthest.

I agree that lots of folks over do it with what they choose to shoot but that’s fine. If it’s legal and ethical I don’t care. For me though a 20 gauge slug gun gets the job done.
I also hunt the early archery season with a crossbow and don’t give a crap about all the folks who throw shade on crossbow hunters.
Everything I do is legal and ethical.
I have a blast doing it and mind my business.
If people don’t like it then that’s on them.
October 2nd can’t get here soon enough!
