Do you think LDWF should change the dove opener on years like this?

Other states, like Texas, open their dove day on September 1st, regardless of what day of the week it is. Sept 1 is the earliest the Feds will allow dove season to open around here. Louisiana waits for the first Saturday in September, which means that every few years you miss out on Labor Day weekend hunting. This year I think LDWF should have opened it on Sunday, Sept 1. That way people would have Sunday and Monday to hunt. Dove day should be open on Labor Day if at all possible, imho.

No, I think since it falls this way so rarely that it may help the dove numbers in the long run by keeping some people off the fields for three days straight. No reason to change it just because a holiday is close to the opener.

Nope. Saturday opener always.

This gives the ability for people to hunt Texas opener and Louisiana opener if they choose

That’s true I guess. I’m going dove hunting in Texas this weekend for the first time ever.

Yes. They should.
This seems to happen every 4-5 yrs.
Labor Day weekend is for shooting dives

Seriously though, growing up in LA we always dove hunted just on opening day and that was our only dove hunt of the year.
As I've gotten older, I find I enjoy dove hunting more. So I take advantage of TX Sept. 1st opener. Usually it's midweek and my boss and I take off work to hunt my mom's ranch. This year it just happened to work out perfect. Last year TX and LA both opened on the same day since Sept. 1st was a Saturday, so some years it's a wash.
Rule of thumb: The day a certain date lands on rolls forward one day year to year, except leap years, when it jumps two days.
2 years ago, I hunted TX on a Friday Sept. 1st before opening day in LA on the second. Last year Sept. 1st was a Saturday. This year Sunday. Next year is a leap year so Sept. 1st jumps an extra day to Tuesday.
If you want to drill down deeper, the next decade sets up perfect as well.
(Leap year) Tuesday, Sept. 1st 2020
Wednesday, Sept. 1st 2021
Thursday, Sept. 1st 2022
Friday, Sept. 1st 2023
(Leap year)Sunday, Sept. 1st 2024 Again...
Monday, Sept. 1st 2025
Tuesday, Sept. 1st 2026
Wednesday, Sept. 1st 2027
(Leap year) Friday, Sept. 1st 2028
Saturday, Sept. 1st 2029 (TX and LA open on the same day again)

We need not petition the government about dove season. Labor day should be the first Monday after the first Saturday in September.
Problem solved.
