Do you scalp your lawn in the spring?

I have a zoysia lawn and I always left my grass a little tall during the winter to protect the roots from hard freezes. It can get down to the single digits where I live. For the first mowing in the spring, I usually just cut the grass at the normal mowing height. But I am thinking about cutting the grass lower for the first mowing this spring to get rid of the old "crown". Anybody else do this?

I drop my deck 1/2 inch from what I cut it at the year before on the 1st cut.

My yard is covered with white flowered weeds right now. When the mowing finally hits, it will be a scalp.

Never heard of that one, although I have St Augustine.

I think as a whole most people scalp or cut their grass too short.

I cut my st aug real short...and then de thatched. it was and is in bad shape from a untreated bout of brown patch last fall and the weather over winter. I have some bare spots now...going to be a muddy summer I guess.

I usually do. And then up a notch the next cut and another after that. By summer time I’ve got it the height I like it.

Yes I have zoysia and like to scalp it early. Makes a royal mess and time consuming. Have to stop every few rows to empty the bag. But it seem to keep the grass healthy.

What do you use to de thatch? A pull behind your mower or an actual thatch mower?

Rent a machine from the MWR on the local AFB. Costs $60 for the weekend, I run it over at my parent's house too and they split the rental fee.

Greens up faster and makes it thicker.

I see my neighbors doing this on their centipede. It seems like a mistake to me.

I used to burn my Bermuda before green up. Now I have a dog I cut it about 1/2” then set my mower for about 1” the rest of the year. I have Zoysia in my courtyard and have burned it in the past and it did fine.
When you burn the ground is black and really heats up fast so you have an early green up.

If you have a dog that comes inside trust me you do not want to burn your yard off.
