The practice goes back to old single action revolvers, where there were no devices to keep the firing pin from "resting" on the primer of a live round in the cylinder.
So you kept the chamber directly under the firing pin empty.
Modern double action revolvers and most single actions as well these days have safety devices that make this old practice unnecessary.
Drop a Colt SAA the right way with the hammer on a live primer --- BOOM

Old Ruger ads stated that cowboys used to roll up money and put it in the empty chamber to pay for burial in the event they died on a cattle run.

here are situations where having a gun with one in the pipe is incredibly stupid IMO.
Like people who leave their rifles loaded in the camp. Or leave loaded weapons unlocked in their bedrooms when young kids are home.
That was me assuming the OP was using the weapon for self defense in each scenario. In which case, I stand by what I said. Storage or weapons not used for that purpose are another matter.

If you're expecting combat it definitely should be cocked locked and ready to rock

I've instructed my kids to never, ever, ever ever ever ever ever ever touch a gun without my say so.
So you're saying that if something happens, it's their fault, not yours?

I have small kids in the house, so I keep one in the chamber inside of one of these. if my gun were out in the open, it would be completely unloaded with no ammo in sight.
So,you feel safer keeping a loaded gun around just because there isn't one in the chamber? I'm sure most young kids would eventually figure out how to rack the slide on a semi-auto... I sure as hell did when I was 10 years old...

I like the thick picture frames that hinge open. No lock to deal with.
And I also carry a large frame revolver on an empty cyl. I know it is not necessary, but makes me feel better when running around woods or marsh like a wild man.
