We are. She said our house was perfect for them the way the roof is constructed. Pointed out several of our neighbors and which ones would work and which ones would be a pain. Like I said, we have one continuous ridge from end to end. The only place we have anything other than a long straight run of roof is the gable over the front porch. So basically 3 planes.

They can exchange air between the vents and not exchange the hot air with cool air through the soffits, this is normally not a good idea.

BINGO!!! i'm glad someone posted this. what wick said is spot on. fyi: big whirleys move more air (1,400 cfm in a 7 mph breeze) than ridge vents can. i don't remember the what the cfm ridge vents are capable of but it's not as much as big whirleys. the Louisiana House at LSU is a great reference for questions like this.
also, make sure whatever shingles you get are impact resistant rated and pass this info on to your insurance company. impact resistant shingles are not subject to the same proration as non-impact rated shingles - wick, clean this up for me if i've got it wrong.

There’s a huge difference between architectural and 3 tab shingles, outside of the obvious visual appeal. Arch will typically have a better warranty, some sort of algae resistance and higher wind and hail protection.

If you’re going architectural, take a look at the Malarkey or Certainteed

Class 3 and 4. It’s how they’re rated by dropping a steel ball. 4 is the highest available but 3 is still a good choice.

They use Atlas products, some type of Ice and Water underlayment in joints, as well as synthetic felt all over.

If you’re going Atlas, get the Pinnacle Pristine over the Prolam. The Pinnacle has 130mph wind protection and Scotchguard. So they’ll keep their color for a while longer.

I wouldn't buy an Atlas product after they ripped off and denied warranty coverage to 10,000s of people who bought the Atlas Chalet shingles that were defective.

Google "Atlas Chalet Shingles" and all you get is lawyers and class action lawsuit links.

If you read above I didn’t recommend them. But the OP said his contractor used them

I posted mainly as a PSA about Atlas. They offered a 30 year warranty and told people to pound sand when the shingles failed in 5-10 years. They may make a perfectly fine shingle now but they showed they would not stand behind their product when they made a product that sucked.

That pic I posted is it. The back of the roof is almost flat. 1.5 story with a full basement. Basically attic space under the shingles and the second floor is only the back half of the footprint of the house. It was built like 50 years ago.
