My old man and I jumped on a lease last year in Petal, MS with a colleague of his and his son. It was approximately 450 acres with a good bit of it on a cutover. We got in late last year and hung a few ladder stands and threw up some ground blinds next to feeders we put out. The hunting wasn't great but I believe it has some potential once/if we put in the work to put up some box stands, food plots, etc. The biggest issue is we don't have a camp on the land. There are a handful of crackheads that are next door to the property and we have already had issues with them and I know if we bring in a trailer or build something they will break in and take what they want. Going back and forth to a hotel eliminates a ton of the fun of having a lease/camp.

I'm not in love with this place and we have not dumped a lot of money in it, so I am curious if anyone on the OB knows of an opening on a lease or has a contact(s) in the south Mississippi area. I live in Mandeville and would like to keep the drive around 2 hours or less. I have a one and a half year old that I dream of bringing out to the camp. Appreciate any and all info.

You will have better luck bagging a Boone and Crockett pink unicorn than finding a good lease....but good luck

Ours only had a couple of people get out last year and we had 10 on the waiting list.

Slim pickings on breaking into a new lease this year.

Just a couple ideas...

-Find a local deputy to join the lease.

-Buy a camper and haul it each time OR find a local that will allow you to park it at their place during hunting season.

Either way you need someone who lives close to keep an eye on the place.

If you can’t get into another lease or club and staying at a hotel just doesn’t give you the camp experience, you may look into reserving a campsite at one of the local campgrounds. I did a goodie search and a few popped up. I’m not familiar with the area and don’t know anything about them but you could get a cabin right on the lake. Probably have the place to yourself. Might work out with you and a couple of others to cut cost. Just thinking outside the box.

Link to one of the campgrounds.

Sounds like a no win. Having said that, I'm not a fella who can help you with the crack heads, but I'm in the area and I'm looking for a place to take my kids hunting. Haven't had any luck finding a place - I'd be willing to pitch in on the cost of the lease or possibly pick it up from you and help you cut some of your losses if you find another lease.

Appreciate the ideas guys. The campground site is a great idea. I will look into that more.

My good buddy and I may be looking for 1 more member at our place in Jefferson County, MS. We have 480 acres to ourselves with a camp house on the property. We both live on the NS and have young kids, but are extremely picky about who we want at our secret slice of paradise.

I live in Madisonville and make it to the front door of the camp in 1:45 most of the time. The longest part is getting from my office in Mandeville past the traffic on I-12 to clear sailing. When I decide to stay and hunt Sunday evenings, I typically drive back Monday morning and can be home by 6, get kids up for school, and into the office by 8.

The only negative point in our location right now is that the local strip club 6 miles away closed down a few months ago. Buddy's 16 year old son was really wanting to make a few trips this coming season with us being that his Daddy told him he had to wait until he could drive in order to see the sights.

Would love to discuss further if you're open to it. The drive is about the same as I have to my current lease so that is great. Would love to learn more about what you guys have in place. Thanks for the consideration.

ETA: that's a shame about the titty bar shutting down. I remember being about the same age as your buddy's son and frequenting those establishments. You can't unsee some of those sights

If you're talking about the Blue Goose/Bo's.... Im going to be pissed.

Also, add me to the list of interested parties. I have a buddy that owns a place near there, but its family only. Would love to have my own place to go around there.

I currently SERVE in a very unpopular profession PROTECTING and have small kids as well.

In either case, let me know if im correct on the club that closed.
