Going to be in Decatur next week for work, thinking about getting in a turkey hunt of two. Looks like a good chunk of public around there. Black Warrior WMA & Bankhead National Forest. Anyone have any experience around there?

I don't hunt North Alabama but I will advise you to know the rules to each WMA or Nat'l Forest as they are all different.

Bankhead and Black Warrior are from daylight to 1 pm only.

Make sure you're not using a "mechanical" decoy. One that you can manipulate for movement/sound or affix to your shotgun barrel. Dats agin the law.

Seriously bring your hiking boots. It’s up and down and pretty gnarly in some areas. I’ve only been up there a few times deer hunting and never saw any turkeys or turkey sign but they may not have been where I was. The WMA is in the NF and there is a lot of land to cover. Plenty of hogs tough.

I genuinely wish you luck and I believe that anyone that goes into that landscape and comes out successful is a good woodsman.

You’ll have a hard time getting a tom to call back on mgt area land this late.

There are definitely birds on Black Warrior, but it’s huge and rough.

The Sipsey Wilderness is in Bankhead and is something like 40K acres of walk-in only, leave no trace wilderness with 2 directions…up & down.

I would encourage you to get a guided fishing trip below one of the dams instead. Stripers and smallmouth should be running in the tailraces.
