Cypremort State Park fishing recs?
Posted by TigerNAtux on 2/19/21 at 11:01 am00
Anyone familiar with this area?
Any info would be helpful. Maps, boat/tackle recs...
Thinking of making a trip in April. More interested in inland fishing, don’t have the boat for big water.
TIA

It’s usually pretty fresh and muddy in April You can catch reds in the marsh closeby but for trout you will probably need to go way south (gulf)
Marsh island is a good bet for reds and crabs if you have a big enough boat

April is going to be tough fishing in the bay, especially if you're looking for trout with a small boat. If you go a little west or east, or wait until the fall, you will likely have better luck. Might be able to find some reds in canals north of the park or on the north end of the bay though. Dead shrimp on a popping cork along the banks if you're looking for reds. Just my two cents though.

Unless the Basin/atch River is low, the fishing isn’t great. Gets muddy quick.

Would Vermillion River area be any better? We initially were looking at Palmetto State Park... Drove through there yesterday and boat launch was blocked by fallen dead trees. Not sure if that’s recent or hurricane left overs.
I do wildlife photography too...if the fish aren’t bitin’.

Also, look at Sam Houston Jones SP if it's back up and running.
Last time I camped at SHJ, there were a lot of campers with boats.
For amazing photography and decent freshwater fishing, check out Chicot State park in Ville Platt.

Vermilion River, trashy through laffy and you could find a dead body between 90 and origins in St Landry parish. Bring a sack lunch and dranks, explore.

Palmetto is a pretty place. I know that you can use a canoe over there and fish, but I have never tried it. If you like photography then I would choose Palmetto over Cypremort - just my opinion. You'll find more of a freshwater swamp type habitat over a saltwater coastline/marsh habitat.

Oh it was beautiful...wild hogs running free down the park roads without a care in the world. Guess they’ve figured out they won’t be hunted there.
Palmetto is certainly the perfect name for the place.
Thanks for the advice.

There are fish in the ponds at Palmetto. Bass, sacalait, and bream. Beautiful area to photograph.

Run up to Jefferson island rookery while there. Roseate spoonbills and a ton of other wading birds should still be nesting

I’ve photographed there before. All manner of birds in that place.

If your going offshore for bigger fish ur good mostly anytime u get good conditions however if ur looking to red fish, anytime is usually OK just pick good days but if your looking to trout fish, certain things gotta be in place before u gonna get a successful trip.
1st off the river has to drop under 10ft(jmo) for more salty water to start backing up into verm. bay and northern gulf...
2nd off you need a west wind to push cleaner(visability) water into area...
3rd off you wanna fish for trout in west or northerly slight 0-5mph winds if u wanna fish the reefs with success
4th by fall when it cools down, the trout head north towards the cove near the beach and rentals. Its a dam boat fest of a gazillion boats going nuts to find trout. If u go on a weekday u may get lucky and have lesser boats and u can catch a mess full.
Hopefully for end of May the achaf river is low enough for fishing to get hot like last year. Before last year it was end of July practically before some assemblance of salt was mixed into water in the last few years before.
Also around late April cocodrie gets hot thru out summer time for last island/pelto area. Every year I fish this area until the point gets hot.....its a drive somewhat but worth it if u know where to fish

The place was great fishing back in the late 1960s and early 1970s when I was young. Great memories. It’s probably changed by now. Best of luck. Please post a report after your trip. Following...

We used to fish the trash pile in Weeks bay in the fall back in the early 80s. If you caught the winds and tides right the specks would run thru Shark bayou into Weeks Bay, then over to the trash pile in big schools. You'd better have multiple rods baited up so you wouldn't miss to many. We would catch 2 at a time on spec rigs w/shrimp under poping corks.

I remember watching cigarette boats racing through Shark Bayou in the ‘70s. Fun times.
