I’m looking for a custom rod builder in LA who would be willing to use St. Croix Blanks. I want to make a shorter rod for fishing the trestles.

"OCR" Oliver's Custom Rods
1208 LA 728-8, Lafayette, LA 70501
(337) 233-6341

Craig is a skilled rod builder and an even better guy. Give him a shout, you won't be disappointed.

What length you want to go with, jigging or trolling?

I build rods for my immediate family and close friends, I'm curious what makes you decide St. Croix is the only option? Not saying it's a bad decision, they are good blanks, but I like to hear opinions on the different blanks.

A few years ago I switched to only fishing with st croix rods/blanks. That’s not because they are the best. I’m sure there are “better”, more affordable rods out there.
I really just wanted to pick a brand that I could trust to deliver a consistently well done product. I wanted to be able to know exactly what I was getting in my actions/powers. For instance, I know St croix rods run a little stiff so their medium is really in between a M/MH. That’s a perfect sweet spot for my jigging rod. I know exactly what rod I want per application.
I’d be shooting in the dark if I went with another company.

Lance Dupre of Swampland Tackle use to be in Houma and looks like he has a Lafayette address now.

His work on a lot higher level and been doing it a lot longer than Craig at OCR or Oliver Custom Rods.

Nothing wrong with Craig, just Lance has a lot more experience in what you are asking to do. It not just matching a blank up and building. It may involve finding something close and cutting it down which can change the action of a blank. Then he deals with Baston blanks which are also a blank to look at.

I like this. I also like St. Croix a bunch. They have great customer service and their rods hold up.

I reached out to Lance and got a build started but he stopped responding to my texts and FB messages. Not sure what happened there.

That would be sad if he is out of the business.

Always the type of guy that pushed the limits of rod building.

When I build a rod, its a rod nothing fancy as it for myself or friends.

When he built a rod, it was a work of art and performed well.
Whenever I asked him for idea for a certain type rod he threw some good ideas from spacing, guides, or even blank type.
