33 year old me is looking at these and I’m thinking of getting the 4 cyl.

No trailer.
No boats.
No atvs.
No SxS.

Just a commuter truck that I can take to Lowe’s for simple bed hauling. Work is about 20 miles up the interstate.

Has anybody here had both 4 and 6 cyl. models? YouTube reviews have essentially said they’re the same in terms of mpg, but the 6cyl. has more power (obviously).

What the 4cyl. excels at is the ease of DYI maintenance in the engine bay.

I’ll be moving on from my ‘03 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 (98k miles) that’s not being used anywhere near its capabilities.

4 cylinder = good for gravel roads only

Buy nice once. Get a 6.

I have experience in both.

My Grandpa has a 4cyl TSS one and he likes it. I've driven it, it's not bad. He pulls a small boat with it without issue.

I have a 4 and have drove a 6. I would get the 6 if I could do it again just for the acceleration. It takes forever to get up to speed on the Interstate and forget about passing on a two lane road unless you can see a long way down the road.

I can't picture a world where I would want a 4 over a 6. So I say go with the 6.

I can. My 2012 4wd base 2 door has the 2.7 that does everything I need it to do. It’s not a speed demon, but 80 on the interstate is no problem. Doesn’t get there fast, though. Never had a problem merging or passing either. Pulls a trailer with a heavy zero turn once a week with no problem. Off road the 2.7 shines (also no worries of overpowering the drivetrain, lol).

And if you drive normal…close to 24mpg on the highway. Around town…nowhere near 24.

Edited to take out my statement on the 6cyl needing timing belt maintenance… I was wrong about it (has timing chain).

If the mpg is about the same then always get the bigger engine!

Ever plan on getting any of these?

I like to keep vehicles for as long as possible so I plan accordingly.

If not then the 4.

As much as I would like, I don’t have the funds for those extra toys or the land that’s required to enjoy them. Maybe one day it’ll be in the cards, but the wife and I are talking about kids so we might be talking about getting here a new vehicle as well that will be the “family” vehicle.

ETA: currently looking at this one:

i had both in earlier years, the 4 was beter on gas by like 2 mpg worth and if you wanted to pass a car on flat level road you needed no less than 1/4 mile empty road when you floor it or you wont make it. you will also downshift into 2nd going up any bridge at all.

the v6 is what you want, its about 40% more power than the 4 cylinders, and even then, the v6 still feels underpowered when passing cars because of the way they gear those trucks for towing

Id get a 4 banger. Those Toyota 4 cylinders are bomb proof and simple and I'm a cheap bastard.

You will definitely need to be ok with not going anywhere in a hurry.

Also, as I was reading more on it, you should replace the chain at some point. These newer engines are set to interference which means the pistons and valves essentially touch. Once the chain goes, it fricks everything. This is also the same on the 4 cylinder.

Futhermore, if you have a belt, it is recommended to change it every 60k to 75k. The 100k is the absolute max just based on wear.

I'm not a mechanic but have worked on cars most of my life due to being poor.

I got a Tacoma as a rental not long ago. I was shocked when I walked around to the tailgate and saw the V6 badge. I was positive it was a 4.

The 6 cylinder I had was fine power wise. I didn’t like the transmission. Was programmed to shift early to save on fuel. Became too shifty. Would downshift going over overpasses on the interstate. Traded in on 2019 F-150 but had worse tranny with the 10 speed. What a nightmare.

4 bangers are great for those lacking Y chromosome.

For a kid? 4

For an adult? 6

Recently traded my chevy for a Tacoma.

and traded the wife's ford for a 4Runner.
