I figured I would come ask the coonasses on the board to give a N.LA boy some tips on how its done. We set out a few traps yesterday evening and didn't have much luck. They are baited with chicken liver. Any tips or tricks to finding them?

Thanks!!

Set them in different depths, see what depth is productive, switch all to that depth

I don't have much trap experience, I use set nets and bait with melt

Might still be a little early for wild crawfish. Probably will be getting good around this time next month. For bait, I would use either melt or an oily fish like pogey. I find the pogey holds up a little better than the melt and is easier to deal with.

Cow spleen.

Works the best as far as bait goes. That and fish heads.

Hmmm, I caught an ice chest full yesterday. Traps baited with chicken backs and necks. Locate beside a flooded creek in water that has some current in it.

Just any creek or do you look for certain vegetation, depth, etc?

Flooded hardwood bottom has worked out best. But I've had friends set nets along a roadside ditch that gets flooded and have good results.

Movement/current in the water is best. And rising water is even better...once the water level starts to go down, the crawfish seem to turn off their feeding frenzy like a light switch.

For nets, no deeper than 18" to 24" or you'll lose your nets. For traps, I've caught them down to 3'-4' feet deep, that's about as deep as I can go in waders.

Well I guess I don't have enough coonass in me! Went to check traps only had 5! I had them in the flooded timber with current. I changed the depth and will check them again in a few hours.
