Does spraying water on the outside if the pot help at all?

NO NO NO NO!!!!
I hate crawfish that are boiled like that. The whole throw them in a chest and sprinkle season on them just sucks!!

Yeah , I don't think that cool water would do much to that much boiling hot water

Never had them that way but that sounds horrible

You're the one all gung-ho for it so I assumed it was necessary to your technique. Screw ice.

Just curious but why wouldn't you want to slow down the cooking process and help the soaking process?
Why the hate for ice?

You're diluting the seasoning. Spray the pot off with a hose.

Bunch of experts here ...Guess you are all right

Spray the pot off ftw
Don't dilute your seasonings

Correct....the spraying of the pot>ice. I don't like a head of crafish full of seasoning. I like just the fat in the heads with maybe a little bit of seasoning.
My family has never used ice on either side, have had many friends of the family stop using ice and use our method, but I will never tell.
Hint: has to do with draining.

Never tried it but it seems like it would make a mud hole when doing multiple sacks

This is great to get up to.
Only place in the world where grown men argue about which technique is best for boiling mudbugs...I love it!

I freeze several 2 liter bottles of water and drop them in to stop cooking and complete soaking w/o diluting.

I just season the water enough that even with ice it will produce the desired result

They shouldn't be overcooking if this is the method you are using. Unless your crawfish are small or you are leaving the lid on the pot or putting them into an ice chest after cooked with the lid down where they cook even more.
I usually bring them to a boil early in the season and cut the fire. Later on in the season when the crawfish are a little thicker shelled I usually boil for a couple minutes. Then I spray the pot down several times to cool it down. It definitely helps cool the water down some especially if the lid is off. I see a lot of people soaking crawfish with the lid on which defeats the purpose of the cooldown method. When I boil I'm usually on cement so I don't have that problem but if you are on grass boiling it can make a mess.
