Made a short trip behind my house today - first trip in over a month - hoping to find a baby cottonmouth. Jackpot! First snake I found was a gorgeous little cotton that was probably born last month - smallest I’ve ever seen! Had to work to get to him and make the catch but well worth the effort.

Didn’t handle him long because those small heads are tricky to control.

Didn’t walk too long but almost stepped on a larger one. Stepped over a log and was looking to my left when I heard a tail rattling against the dry leaves. Turned around to find a cotton about 2 feet behind my boot. Slithered under the log before I could get a grab at it.

You know the saying - “If it was a snake it woulda bit me”…and it was a snake but it didn’t bite me because cottons are defensive, not aggressive, and it just wanted to alert me to its presence then get the hell away from me.

The problem with looking for snakes is end up finding them. I make it a point not to worry about watching for them and I never rarely see them. That's a pretty cottonmouth, though.

I'm not terrified of snakes but I have no interest in picking them up and playing with them

He may get bit, but it won’t have anything to do with a cottonmouth being aggressive. Because they aren’t.

Exactly. In my 2 years here I’ve had around 150 cotton encounters and caught close to 50. I can count on one hand how many have even struck at me. Plenty won’t even open their mouth when I’m encouraging them to with my snake hook so I can get a good photo.

I can think of one only that actually struck when I walked up on him to catch him. The other few strikes were after I got them to gape for photos several times and really pissed them off. They are even pretty chill when you handle them - only a small percentage of them get squirmy. Every copperhead I’ve handled has been squirmy though.

I've never felt directly threatened by a venomous snake. I've only been near a couple of rattlers, but I found myself within sight of about half-dozen CMs at the same time, about 20 or so years ago. Again, not threatened, not scared, but very apprehensive.
