I applied for the a conceal carry permit three weeks ago and also mailed in my fingerprints from a local sheriff’s office. My tracking number for my fingerprints shows they were delivered to the address given to me by LDPS CHP. To those of you who has applied here as of late, how long was the process for you to get your permit?

I would say at this time they have a huge influx of applications. When I did mine it was during a large influx and it took 6 months. I wish I would have went there and did it in person to get it immediately.

I filed my application in December. I got my permit in March. I filed my application electronically and paid by credit card. The application was showing in their system the next day when I went to have my prints taken at LSP headquarters. All payments and information that I needed to provide them was provided within a 48 hour period.

Their claim on why it took so long was that they were backlogged due to getting hacked in November. I have no idea if they have recovered from the "backlog".

There's always the chance that your prints weren't legible/readable. This happens in about 40% of the "ink & roll" prints,

Did your sheriff's office use a digital scanner ?

I renewed a year ago and it took me 6 weeks to do it all online. A buddy at work just did his and got it within 3 weeks. I think that perhaps because you mailed in the finger prints may add a little bit of time to it. They are going to sit on a desk and then have to be scanned and matched up with your application. My honest guess is 3 months give or take.

Wow - in Alabama it was easy. I sent in my online application last Friday morning. I got an email Friday afternoon that my permit was approved and in the mail. I paid $75 for a 5 year permit.

I lived most of my life in Alabama but moved to Florida 8 years ago. When I was there you went to the Sheriffs office filled out a post card size application paid them $20 and walked out the door with your permit. The next year they would send you a notice and you could renew by mail. Florida is a lot more complicated. The Department of Agriculture is the permitting agency. You have to get an appointment. The application process is done on a computer and very much like a Form 4473 but more. Also have to prove safety and proficiency unless you are a veteran. Plus finger printed. Pay a $50 application fee plus $75 for a 7 year permit which you can expect to receive in about 90 days.

If you get the fingerprint scan done at LSP and file online it goes much faster. I got mine in 30 days. My dad did his at local sheriff’s office and mailed and it took 4 months. We took the same class and submitted within a few days of each other.

They don’t do fingerprints in Kentucky. All you have to do is pass a written test and then the markmanship test. It’s all one day and they give you your certificate. Take that and $60 to your sheriff and they send it off. Less than 30 days they let you know it’s arrived for pickup. Renewal is every 5 years at the $60 price. I’ll be up for second renewal in two years.

How soon do you have to transfer from Alabama to Kentucky? We're moving to Lexington in October, but my Alabama permit doesn't expire until 2022.

Keep your Alabama permit. It’s good here until it expires. I don’t know about transfers cause I’ve never done it but wait til it gets closer to expiration time.

Edit: I forgot that we have constitutional carry so no permit is required to carry. If you want to transfer, you can and be eligible once you receive it to bypass NICS on your firearm purchases. Still don’t know transfer rules but I’ll look it up later.

Georgia, $71 for 5 years. Received permit in less than 3 weeks. Generally, easy permit and purchasing in Georgia. Get while it is good.

Just be patient, OP.

I did mine well before the societal shite hit the fan and iirc it still took 6 weeks. That was about 9 years ago.

I did my application online. Went to State Police HQ the day after I got my email confirmation that they received the app. They took my picture (I think? Or maybe they use the one off your driver's license?) and did my fingerprints electronically at HQ. On my way home I got 2 emails, one saying they accepted my prints and the 2nd was my bill to pay for everything. Pulled to side of road and paid. Got an email within minutes confirming all of that. Received my permit in the mail 7 days later.

From start to finish it took 12 days.

Moral of the story? Always go do your CC Permit in person at State Police HQ!

They're legit, even though they're usually in some poorly finished microstore in a shitty strip mall.

They have a contract with the feds to handle fingerprinting and identity confirmation for things like TWIC, TSA Precheck, Global Entry, etc.

Have them print out several copies of your prints on form FD-258 while you're there. If you need fingerprints in the future for transfer or creation of really fun toys, you'll have them ready to go. I got like ten cards printed out when I got fingerprinted for my CHP. Remember that fingerprints often have to be submitted in duplicate, so get enough.
