My family has 1100 acres that a hunting camp has leased for years. Next year we are taking it back over and hunting it as a family (extended family) . What are some common rules to make hunting conditions fair for everyone and lead to good deer management? We are probably going to have communal stands and will split feed/fertilizer costs. We will allow guests, but any deer guests kill counts toward your own yearly limit. Obviously guests can't hunt without a member. We're going to set a doe minimum to kill before first buck, and set a minimum buck limit (suggestions?) what else is common?

No riding in the woods during certain hours of hunting season.

No shooting of collared dogs.

A parcel map or aerial map with locations of where every hunter is going to be.

Do you know the herd numbers on the property? How many people will potentially be hunting this property? I think that is a general area to start. I hunt on my own place, but if I did ever share my land with others I would want to know exactly who is going to hunt it.

There will be 6-8 hunters, and a formal deer herd population has not been determined, but we have discussed getting someone from wildlife management to come help us out.

Make a board with stand locations with name tags & guest tags, limit one guest per member. First come first serve to the board.
Have times set to get in stands & out so they won´t interrupt the other hunters.
Be sure to note whether anyone is allowed to hunt from climbers or lock-on & if so where they will be for safety reasons.

Very smart if you did it. In Georgia they will ride at night with you to do a general head count

Is this normal? I hunt private land but that rule sucks.

The only set in stone rules at my camp are the new guy brings the blue bunny bread and, in the words of my father, "DON'T SLAM THE DAMN SCREEN DOOR!".

It's fairly common in some managed clubs to require a member to kill a doe before they can kill a buck. A certain number of does have to be killed for managing the herd and some folks don't like doing it. This rule makes them do it.

The doe rule isn't a hard set rule, and if you see a trophy buck then of course you can shoot it, but it keeps the doe population managed so that you can actually grow healthy deer and not over populate an area with solely selectively removing the mature bucks

I understand the idea behind it but who wants to be the a-hole and fine the guy who shoots a 12pt deer opening weekend?

I would shoot that deer and say, f yall, Im done for the season. Keep the fine.

Then why have rules? Serious question. If you make a precedent that rules can be broken, why have them? Where will yall draw the line at what rules can be broken and which ones cannot?
