Mt. Yale, 14,200 ft.

I am exhausted. Woke up at 2:30 and started on the trail at 4:30. Summited around 8 AM. We were the first ones up. Just crashed. Ton of fun.

I’d estimate 38 or so. My hands were freezing because the 200 foot summit push past the saddle is basically just a pile of boulders. Some class 3 stuff. Had to use my hands and the rocks were freezing.

Would you say a climb like that is safe?

My 12 yo daughter loves to hike. I would love to take her on a hike like that.

Go to 14ers.com

They rank all the routes by difficult 1-53. They separate it into Class 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

They also rank each route by Exposure, rockfall risk, and path finding difficulty.

Yale is ranked 33 out of 53 in difficulty,

IMO, Mt. Yale is probably safe as long as you are smart. It is a class 2. Up to the saddle (200 feet below the summit) it is steep and difficult but not awful. The ridge up to the summit is wider than most, but still need to be very careful,

The flat area is the saddle.

The most difficult part:

If you are unsure, try a Class 1 or easy class 2 first, probably with low exposure. If all goes well try another. That website is your friend.

That’s amazing. This intrigues me and I may have to add it to my bucket list. Excuse my ignorance but did you need any “equipment” per se?

I carried an actual hiking backpack, but that’s unnecessary. You just need a pack that can carry at least 90 oz of water or so. I use two 32 oz bottles plus two plastic bottles.

You want to carry extra layers, so a sweatshirt or long sleeve or something. Also sunscreen, chapstick and whatnot. I used trekking poles for balance on the way down.

Ever since reading Halfway to Heaven several years back I've wanted to climb one. Haven't taken the time yet.

Congratulations! I don't climb mountains but lately for some reason I've watched a lot of YouTube about attempts at K2, Annapurna and Everest. Will you set your sights on one of those? Those climbers are crazy and and about 25 to 30% don't make it back home.

Just bring water and snacks. Map and compass if you want but most east trails are full of people. Hard to get lost. Make sure to have clothing to break the wind as it’s brutal above tree line.

Start early. Plan to get back below tree line by early afternoon before the storms.
