Cicada "hatching" pics
Posted by The Last Coco on 7/31/18 at 9:10 pm780
Caught a cicada shedding its exoskeleton this evening and thought the OB might appreciate the pics:
Hope you enjoy!
ETA: I've caught them in the act a few times before but it was always too dark for pics. These came out really nice just using my phone camera.

Cool pics. Thanks. I’ve only found their abandoned exoskeletons. Think I saw one in flight when I was a kid. Neat insects.

People colloquially refer to cicadas as locusts, but they are definitely not locusts.
I assume that's an annual brood in the pictures.
ETA - The next 13 year brood will emerge in 2024.

They are what you hear and say "listen to the locusts," but they are not locusts. A lot of people call them locusts, but it is not correct.

Gottcha. Then ive seen one or two of these hatching back when i was a kid. Used to collect all the shells off my treehouse and back of the shed.

For some reason the Cicada is popular in France. Shops in Niece were selling clothing with pics of Cicada's on them.

Nope. You hear these cicadas during the day time. What you are hearing at night are katydids. Here are some pics of katydids. LINK ETA: You should also be able to get some great nighttime copperhead pics if you've got a cicada hatch emerging...

Great pics, I've always heard they are a favorite food to a copperhead. Is this just an old saying?

the true locust is a grasshopper
and yes, copperheads flock to them when they hatch, last year i had some wildlife biologists come to my place for a round up, they wrangled a dozen or so in a few nights
