Chinquapin on beds and general weekend report
Posted by AlxTgr on 3/23/20 at 8:56 am190
Tigerfoot and I had seen some beds earlier in the week while trying to find shallow perch, but didn't have any worms. So, during our Saturday perch trip, SCwTiger and I took a break from the wind and tossed some worms at the beds. Oh, and some bonus deep perch that still had some eggs which really confuses me. I don't know if they are coming or going.
Then yesterday, Foot, little foot and I caught another 18 of the perches. It was a great weekend of feeling the thump.

Dang that’s awesome.
If you, Foot and SWc are together y’all must be fishing IC?

We stocked my lake with 16,000 bluegill and 4,000 Chinquapin last February. When I try to fish the gravel beds 2-6 feet of water, I can't get a beetle spin or a worm down below the bluegill. They just swarm the bait on every cast. Looking for some tips to find the Chinquapin if you have any.
Alx likes to drop shot them. Maybe a heavy weight would get down to the gravel quicker with that method.
Look for honeycomb looking areas in the bottom with big dark circles. It's obvious when you see it. You'll catch some bluegill around the bed too, but if you get the bait in the dark circle you'll get a bite.

That's interesting. I always thought the Chinquapin bedded a lot deeper than the bluegill.
I used to fish them in a lake near Jackson MS when I was a kid. And we fished them in about 5 feet of water with beetle spins with the spinner removed. Just bounced it off the bottom.

Friday and Sat, 2 of the best days i've had on topwater. Caught bream, chinqs, goggle eyes, sacs, bass and reds all in same pond.
Yesterday it cleared up and topwater bite went to crap, switched to a weedless Slab Runner and filled up a 28 quart in a couple hours.
This morning ran out and caught 3 reds and came in due to gnats. Think they are getting immune to Amber Romance and deet.
