So I have shot AR's, but I've never owned one. FIL gave me a clean Daniel Defense build as a wedding present, but I wanted to get an A2.

I found this from Rock Island

Newbie question - I can just take that buttstock off and install an A2 buttstock, right?

Also, does anybody have experience with a Rock Island AR? I want a quality rifle. I'm not interested in buying something just because it catches my eye. I want a rifle that I can depend on.

TIA.

You want a quality rifle, but you want give up a Daniel Defense in favor of a Rock Island?

Yes, you can put any buttstock you want on it as long as it’s a standard mil-spec buffer tube. There’s another type/size called “commercial-spec” that’s slightly larger in diameter than mil-spec so be in the lookout for that.

When you say “clean Daniel Defense build” what exactly are you referring to? Did he build it for you? Did he give you the pieces to finish the build?

Rock Island is good but a lower tier AR compared to Daniel Defense which is a top of the line AR. I would never exchange a Daniel Defense AR for a Rock Island AR.

The DD is definitely a quality rifle you can depend on.

Sorry, I'm not giving up the Daniel Defense. I'm buying a second AR.

He built it.

This is not correct.

You can not install an A-2 stock on a retractible buffer tube.

I guess that depends.

Do you want a full A2 with a 20" barrel?

If so, the one you linked has a 16" barrel with a carbine gas length.

Rifle length gas system will be softer shooting.

I have an FN-15 series. It's an A3 model with a removable carry handle, but it's a quality rifle.

It's actually a Rock River, not Rock Island.

I know Rock River used to be a solid brand years ago, not exactly sure about them these days.

What you showed isn't an A2, regardless of what they call it in the description. People can call an AR anything they want.

Already covered, but no, you can't put an A2 buttstock on that rifle, and it also has a carbine (or midlength) gas system which is pointless on an A2. If you look for pictures of an m16 A2 you'll notice that the front site is out further towards the end of the 20" barrel; that distance tells you that it's a rifle length gas.

Most of the "tier" nonsense is exactly that when it comes to reliability, and you shouldn't depend on any rifle until you've put a few hundred rounds downrange. Rock River is fine, Colt is fine, DD is fine, Spikes, PSA, whoever. Most (not all, but most) of the garbage brands have been purged by now.

Then I would keep it, run the fire out of it with a few hundred rounds, make sure your mags feed reliably and then buy another one if you want.

Get a BCM Recce 16 MCMR and call it a day. I have close to 10k rounds though mine without a stoppage

I would get a Rock River Arms LAR-15 before a Rock Island one.

Edit: Now I see that is a RRA. That's a decent manufactured AR. Upgrade the trigger and you'll be happy.

Man, I am stuck on stupid today.

Yes, I would prefer a 20" barrel, and I understand from the replies that I can't swap that buttstock out. Is it gas that prevents installing an A2 style buttstock, or carbine length vs rifle length?

I would prefer something with a fixed carry handle vs a removable one, but if there's no appreciable difference in feel or function I'll let that go. I'm not finding too many rifles with a fixed handle anyway, and the ones I do find pretty much start at $1100.

I really don't care about brand. I've looked at Colts, and I do think it's kinda silly to spend for that brand when they're just shopping their furniture out to magpul, but if they've got what I want, that's fine.

I just want a plain, quality rifle that I will never put optics on.

I was thinking of the basic collapsible stock. My bad.

But yes, he’ll have to buy the whole A2 kit with buffer tube in order to install it.

No, I believe it's the shape of the carbine buffer tube that will prevent the swap. Likely the track that they buttstock slides on won't fit the A2 stock designed to take a completely tubular buffer tube.

You could always go the build vs buy route. Looks like Rock River has one for right at a grand. You may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. A2's are little harder to find (and/or more expensive) since everyone is using flat top receivers these days.

I did find a used colt locally for $700. It had lead weights in it, so I'm assuming it was loved and used.

223 only barrel.

I'd be willing to build one, but again, carry handle uppers are expensive and rare.

I wouldn't say they're expensive or rare. They're just not as cheap and prevalent as flat tops.
