I was in Glacier NP in Montana last week and this chipmunk came right up to me looking for food while we were eating lunch by the lake. I snapped a few pics bc I've never seen anything like it and couldn't find any similar pictures of a disease online. At first I thought it was an acorn stuck to its chest but it was clearly part of its body as its fur had grown around it. It was strange because it looked and acted healthy otherwise.

it looked to me like it was purplish and had a hollow hole in the middle

Can’t ID the chipmunk tumor, but I was there two weeks ago. How incredible is that place? Id move up there in a heartbeat.

I killed a squirrel a few years ago, hung it from a branch and when I returned to pick it up, 7-8 bot fly larvae were coming out of it. I'd never seen that before and was both amazed and disgusted.

My brother is the only smart one in my family. Moved there 6 years ago and now unfortunately the secrets out. His house and office have more than doubled in appraised value since hes moved out there since the tri-city area he lives in is now is one of the fastest growing in the nation. He's right outside West Glacier with gorgeous views of the park from his balcony.

Took these pics on my iPhone at Two Medicine inside the park last weekend. We tent camped at the lake for 2 days. Wish I could go back right now!

As others said botfly larva. People always say to not shoot rabbits and squirrels until the weather gets cold for this reason. I have no clue if that holds any weight.

That’s why you don’t shoot them before a frost. As my powpow used to say “ they have the wolf”

Either I’m really lucky, or that theory is horse shite. I’ve eaten many a squirrel and bunny that was harvested in warm weather. Some were even shot during the regular season, and so far no issues.

It’s an area kinda deal. I have hunted in places where if you shoot 10 squirrels 6 of the will have wolves.

If you have hair on your nutts you can clean the squirrels anyway. They are usually just under the skin not in the meat.

I killed a nice 7 point in Natchez a few years ago. While cutting the skin off the skull for a euro mount I ran into about 7 large bot fly larva in the deers nasal cavities. Very disgusting!

Well, the theory isn't exactly horseshite. As mentioned, they're a fly larvae. Flies reproduce in the warm months. That doesn't mean everything you shoot when it's warm will have them, but that's when you'll see them, if you see them. How many animals are carrying them probably varies a lot from place to place and year to year.

Another fact about them is that they're the most disgusting thing on earth. As soon as the body of whatever you shot starts to cool off, these enormous maggots from hell crawl out of a big, gaping hole they left in the squirrel/rabbit.
