Could someone school me on catching flounders in the ship channel this winter/early spring? When does that get good? I was thinking February. Also is it pretty much concentrated from around the ferry to the jetties? Or maybe somewhat north of there? How deep are they typically? Any other tips or advice would be much appreciated. I got to get my son and my dad on the water together this year. I’m pretty sure this will be my dads last season of that kind of stuff. (Alzheimer’s)

Used to gig them about 15 years ago on the west side south of the ferry. The wind and tide have to be right. I dont remember what right was.

I hope somebody can give you better advice, good luck to your and your dad.

Thanks. He tried to hunt this year at clear creek...never could find his stand and couldn’t figure out his gps.

Meant to add we have a boat.

If you are really looking for a great trip I would try and get a guide. Flounder can be really difficult to target especially if you don’t fish down there often. Full moon in October and into November is always the prime time and is the only real time I can target them.

I had it in my head that they migrate into or out of the gulf in the early spring and really stack up in the channel because it’s one of the only ways to get out. And folks really mop up but I could be dreaming that up.

We used to use a double cocahoe rig and tip it with shrimp then just drag it on the bottom. Filled the ice chest every time. Main thing is to find them. Usually cuts coming out the marsh or around the weirs where water is moving.

Floundas is done for the year on BL. Can still be caught at drains and cut into marsh but the big fish are gone for the most part. I did catch one in turners New Year’s Eve that went 5.58# a couple years ago but that was luck.

I'm not a flounder expert, but generally speaking they move on a high tide with the bait into the shallows. To gig them you need a calm shoreline, so the wind blowing from the shore as opposed to into or along the shore is best.

ETA: As far as moving out of the passes, I believe they ride the tides out so low tide is best to catch them moving.
