Buying used four wheeler question

Figured, at a minimum Rando could offer insight, among most others here. Haven't ridden or had a four wheeler in like 10 years. I'm trying to find something old and cheap (late 90s/early 2000s honda/ Yamaha) that just runs to play around with in the woods behind the house. But I wanted to ask, (especially given how bad covid has prices and availability) if the description says stuff like "runs greats, smokes but just needs an o ring and top end rebuild" is that code for more trouble than its worth even if its a decent price? Also, if I see a snorkel is that a sign that its probably been sunk a time or two regardless of what they say? Rookie questions I know, I've always just ridden friends extra four wheelers when we were kids and never had one myself.

It’s pretty tough to find a deal on something worth a damn right now. Avoid snorkels and big lifts, they have generally been ridden hard or sunk. I do know where an all stock Honda 300 is for sale, PM me and I’ll point you in the right direction if interested

That's pretty much it.
I'm actually having trouble getting buyers for a cheap side by side which is fricking insane.
I'm literally trying to get rid of something that runs and drives and people are being weird

Yeh I figured snorkels and giant tires that would look big on a pickup might be a risky move. I am looking at a 300 but they're pretty high right now (even the 90s ones) im looking at. but ill bit just to see. thanks
ETA: shite, I got mixed up with f150forum on the pm, can you pm on TD ? serious question.

I guess the real question is, is a 96 fourtrax 4x4 300 that is basically stock (with no brakes) worth $1,500 (assuming I go verify that it drives decent). I imagine putting some brakes on shouldn't be bad. I feel like I used to drive my buddy's old 3 wheeler that didn't have brakes and it wasn't a huge issue. Then again I also found a Big Red 200 but I can't decide if that it worth dealing with given their age.

A used rhino.
Does it need a little love? Yes.
But I'm literally asking half of what I sold my last one for two years ago.
I bought one and established I'm uncomfortable getting into and out of a rhino.

Yes. But check the rear diff for play in the bearings or metal.
And check the front transfer box for leaks.
No brakes means it saw the occasional bit of water.

I need a neighborhood sled, and would much rather spend cash on a rhino than a golf cart. Have an alternate way to contact you??

Avoid snorkels and big lifts,
I’ve got a snorkel and 2” lift on my 2005 foreman and other than a broke tie rod it’s in good shape.
It’s been to every mud park in the northern part of Louisiana and east Texas although I’ve never been deeper than my foot pegs.
A Honda 300 is a beast. I’ve seen people sink one before. They changed the spark plugs, drained and changed the oil a couple of time and fired it right back up. They’re a tank

can you offer details about your side by side?

Be careful. I would bring it to someone to look over. I purchased a used four wheeler for my son and was told it was never snorkeled or sunk. After the first oil change it started to smoke and lose power. Was told by repair shop that it had defiantly been sunk before. The guy I purchased it from must have used an 80 weight oil to keep it from smoking. Ended up paying more for a complete engine rebuild than I did for the four wheeler. I figured I would take my chance on the rebuild than buying another used one.

thats kind of what im thinking. I have a bunch of childhood buddies that are super mechanically inclined, but im not, atleast as much as I'd like. May be better to just wait and buy a new one down the line or wait until someone I know personally is selling one. Problem is is that these things are so damn expensive now for new/slightly used, that buying one just to play around on hardly is worth 5-7 grand when you could put that money towards a sxs or a truck or something. Thanks for all the input baws.
Rando, you're not stepping on toes. Id buy your side by side if I had the money right now and didn't have a year of school left where I can't work full time

I finally got lucky buying something right before Christmas. To that point, my prior deals in life I tend to buy my boats and what not too high and sell them real low.
Called about an ad in Craigslist about a big bear 350, late 90’s model. Looking for a reliable four wheeler to drive the family around and some hunting. Big bear needed minor work and after I tell the seller what I want it for, he explains he has another bike that would be a better fit.
Long story short I got a ‘98 Honda 300 Fourtrax for $2k that was used relatively sparingly considering its age, by an adult, and wasn’t snorkeled, etc. Had original tires that I changed in the first couple months. Starts right away, only complaint is it shifts a little rough or stiff.
So I think good deals can be had. This was sold by a middle aged school teacher in the country.

I've bought two off of the marketplace.
Changed bearings and brakes and gave them a tune up. One I had to set the valves on as they were loud and clacking.
Invest in a pressure gauge for compression. Theybscrew in. Turn the bike over a few times and get an average reading. Look up what it should be for the bike.
Bring a 10mm wrench and pull the plugs on the dif and look at the oil.
Pull dipstick smell for burnt.
Bearing, seals, brakes are easy enough jobs.
Stay the hell away from the Honda AT400... they are for sale cause the transmission grenades

Start bike.
Hold shifter upward.
Give half throttle for 5 seconds.
Test.
Do no more than three times.
You're welcome.
