Buying a used boat.

Looking to buy my first boat. Have a potential boat I’m trying to go look at. Can anyone tell me what all needs to be done from the paperwork standpoint. Registration, titling, who gets paid. Scenario: used boat, motor, trailer. Will be paying cash without lien holder. Boat is a 2013. Anything I need be known or be aware of would be super helpful. TIA
Also plan on getting the motor checked out by local mechanic. Any particular things to ask the mechanic to check. Hours obviously. My FIL says get compression and lower unit checked.

If La. to La. you'll need bill of sale of a moveable on boat/engine as well as one on the trailer. You'll pay taxes on the trailer only. Those forms are found on the OMV and DW&F sites. You will need the trailer title signed over and notarized, and boat title if the previous owner chose to title it.

I bought a boat a few months ago, the seller and I went to one of the local title places and they did everything for us. Made up the bills of sale, canceled his trailer plate, and transferred all the paperwork for me, including the wildlife and fisheries stuff. If the sale price of the boat is more than $2500 you will have to go to your local tax assessor and have paperwork signed saying the taxes were paid.

That’s a good idea. Thanks, hadn’t thought of that.

Yeah, I’m not sure about it honestly. That’s what the lady at the title place told me when we did the bill of sale for the boat.

Just went through it. LA to LA used boat. No taxes required. Get notarized bill of sale and titles on boat and trailer. Email transfer title/reg app bos and boat title to DWF. Takes about a month. Less than 100 in fees dep on size of boat. Need to go to OMV to transfer title and reg on trailer.
Had the prev owner put the full sale value on boat and no value on motor and trailer on bos.
get service history and engine hours from prev owner. sea trial if possible. check tires hubs brakes and signs of rust on trailer.

What engine?
Dont buy a boat if you get there and they engine is already running. make them cold start it for you. Take the cover off and look at the engine bolts on the block. Look at the heads of the bolts, they should not be scratched. If they all scratched up that means the engine was torn into.
Look at wiring, make sure everything work. A good wiring job is where it's at.
