Don't worry about the water oak... it's coming down eventually anyway.

This is true, they are known for rotting from the inside out and falling and doing lots of damage to property...

Yeah, already knocked one down late last year. Made a thread about it....was anti-climatic. Just moved into this house last year. I have 12 tress on 1/2 acre. Love the shade, but I know most of these trees will have to be removed at some point. If only Langston could hook a fellow OBer up with a good price.

Yeah, we had this discussion when I wanted to knock down that dead tree and trim my other trees. I'll just wait until we have a OBGT and you can bring your crew.

Ok, wasnt sure where that was but yea its a haul. Doubtful a strangers mark up would run what my extra cost would to make that run with equipment.

If you did two post holes, and cut two roots the tree will not be harmed. We used to root prune trees on golf courses. That is nothing more than taking a ditch witch and digging a trench on one side to cut all roots. As long as you only do two sides the tree will live.

Digging two 8x8 holes your back will suffer more than the tree

this. We do it to save slabs from surface roots all the time.

Only one I ever killed the guy told me to prune on three sides, close to the tree. I think he wanted it to die and "accidental death"

If you dont want to cut the roots place the 4x4 post in a concrete pillar with a mushroomed footer.

Dig down 4" in a square 2 ft by 2ft. place 2x6 on edges as a form. Drill a hole in the end of the 4x4 and place a piece of rebar through that to tie it to the concrete when poured. Center the 4x4 on th footer and use the cardboard concrete forms from HD/Lowes for the pillar form. Make sure the pillar form is supported so it is at the level of the top of your footer form.

I would say 320 or so lbs on each 4x4 would be more than sufficent. this is 4 80 lb bags of crete each.

Here are the formulas you need to choose your carboard size.

dont forget to subtract the volume of the post

3.5" * 3.5" * length in the cylinder in inches. then convert cubic inches to cubic feet.

LINK

heck you may not need the footer at all.

but if you do the footer volume woould LxWxdepth all in inches then convert to cubic feet.

A tree has about the same mass in roots as it has in branches. You'd have to cut a lot of them to kill the tree.

The tree is gonna split and fall on your new shed in 20 years.

Dig around roots. Get under them if possible.. dig a big wide hole if you can and use a reciprocating saw with a wood blade. Cut them like butter

Can you move the post in a little and not be on the corners and miss the roots?

I would definitely go this route, screw cutting out roots if you dont have to.

Pour a small concrete footing and use a metal post anchor thru some anchor bolts

A concrete footing may require more digging and root cutting than two posts. Unless he wants to rent a backhoe.

Deacon- get some dynamite. And invite downshift over.
