Is this a fix I should attempt myself? Anyone have experience doing a replacement?

It's a torsion spring type, I've researched it and it looks doable. What is the OB opinion?

I replaced mine but they were not torsion. Helps if you have a good neighbor. Shouldn’t take that long. A 2x4 to prop the door up helps.

That spring can bite you.

I called and had both springs replaced and they tuned up the whole door.

Very satisfied to pay money for this.

It's not hard. It's just dangerous.

I bought the spring and winding rods off Amazon for about $50.

If you're in the BR area, I recommend Doortech.
Have called them for garage and large shop door repair.

Those Springs have quite a bit of stored energy when tensioned. The cost to get someone to do it is too cheap to risk injury and put the hassle involved with setting the torsion (It's not necessarily hard as much as a PIA). I always called to price it and decide to pay them to get me the spring and install it.

If you do, PLEASE set up a camera to record the action.

There are guys who know what they're doing and have the proper equipment to do it safely. They don't charge that much and you reduce the risk to yourself to zero. I'm all about making repairs myself when at all possible, but that's one that's not worth the risk.

I'm all for having a guy come do it if it is out of the realm of possibility, but who did you call to fix it for $100? the cheapest I found was $250.

You can do it just pay attention and try to get tension on both sides as close as you can. While the door is down lock one side in the rail. Use a C-Clamp to lock the other side down. Tighten it down good in the bottom of the track. Then you can start the replacement. Normally a good idea to let the tension off the other side so everything is even. If you do this then just count the number of quarter turns and do both sides the same. Do 10 on one side and 10 on the other... etc...etc... never just do one side then the other. Go back and forth between them and try to see if the tension is close.

Get too much difference between them and the door will not come up straight. It will come up more on one side and jam. Then it is very tough to back it off because now the top of the door will be in your way trying to reach the torsion spring adjuster.

Be careful with this stuff. Make/use 2 tools and always have 2 in the torsion adjuster. If you slip the second tool will stop a runaway spring. Do not try this with one tool. Treat it like you are climbing a ladder, always have one hand on one of the tools. That spring has some power way before you get enough tension to lift a door off the ground, much less lift is all the way to the top.
