This is considered soft IIA level armor. Most vests I have seen are closer to $500-$600. Would this BA clothing still be as effective as an actual vest?

I'd really recommend buying a law enforcement grade ballistic vest that’s properly fit. That way you can wear it under or over any garment of your liking.

If you’re going places that you feel the need to wear body armor, you might want to reconsider where you’re going.

I understand having it for when TSHTF. That day may come where we all wish we had it.

Wouldn't the lack of rigidity be a problem? It's not just stopping the bullet that's important; it's stopping it within a maximum allowable amount of deflection. Even if the bullet doesn't go through you, if it pushes in on your chest four inches, you're gonna have a bad day. Traditional body armor has limited flexibility and is tested to a standard to ensure it doesn't give so much while stopping the bullet that lethal internal injuries are caused. They strap it on a clay torso and shoot it and the dent it leaves in the clay can't be more than something like 2 inches.

How does something as flimsy as a sweatshirt or hoodie do against this kind of test?

That actually looks pretty cool. It looks like the vest is fitted under the clothes and the clothes are loose but attached. I don’t know if I’d trust it though.
