I sure hope you are wrong about this. It would be a shame to let that beautiful resource continue to decline. Hopefully they restore the areas you mentioned, at a minimum. I would also push for restoring the pass at Turner's Bay. I remember when the island was huge and the land on either side wasn't washed out.

he reason all the reefs are silted over and the oysters aren't reproducing is because of the high salinity and water flow down there due to erosion

I was reading the other night and found an article saying the ideal salinity for oyster growth was somewhere between 10 and 20ppt. Right now the lake is at 16ppt. So I don't think the high salinity is the problem, not that I have a very educated opinion. Maybe its the extreme fluctuation the lake has had over the past years with all of the spring rains?

I would say that the dredging in the ship channel and harvesting oysters using dredging methods are what decimated the populations. I am sure erosion is also a factor in that.

Definitely support a rock wall around the Washout/Long Point area though.

There is a tremendous amount of silt in the lake, oysters get silted over, oysters die. You can feel the the water move on the east bank when a ship hits the washout area. There have been multiple studies done $$$, it's time to lay some granite and geotec at the spot everyone knows is the problem but government. Have been in meetings with the oyster biologists and me thinks they are holding back on their theory of the culprit and what could be done to fix the problem. Stevie Wonda could have caught trout in the lake ten years ago, now some of the best can't.

I was in Hackberry last weekend and early this week. Nothing was really biting except the usual hardheads and gafftop. Did well crabbing along 27, though.

Nothing sucks more than being in the ship channel up against the levee and a huge freighter comes in...and sucks all the water off the bank...and next thing you know...you're in the mud. That sucks....

One thing can suck more....when the water comes back! Depending on where it happens, it can be a real adventure.

Yeah especially when you're stuck in the mud.

We fished Calcasieu yesterday. Birds were working all over the west side of the main lake but it was 90% lady fish with very few trout mixed in. For every trout we caught we must have caught 8 lady fish or sail cats. Managed to end up with a decent bag of fish.

Water is nice all over Calcasieu, can’t say what it looks like in West Cove, we didn’t make it down there. I stil think the majority of the trout are offshore. We were cleaning fish at Calcasieu Point and the three guides there all had some trout with some Spanish mackerel mixed in. I am assuming that’s what most of them are doing.

Where on Hwy 27 were you able to find crabs? I am thinking of heading there tomorrow morning. I was also thinking of going to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge but that place gets so many people at times.
