What if I let some sit in the tank and I cut the fuel off and let the generator run until it shuts itself off?

Sure. But make sure your tank is full. And your cap has a closable vent on your tank. Air is death to gasoline.

Noted. I’m gonna get a battery pump this weekend and suck what’s left in the tank out. The safety siphon is great for a tank of gas but harder to get it started if it isn’t very deep. It’s only a little bit in there from my test this past weekend.

And it does have a closed vent that works pretty well. Whenever I open it there’s a pressure release indicating the gas is staying trapped.

Does this mean if I only have half a jerry can of gasoline it’s going to go bad?

re: Best way to store gasoline for generator
I keep a 55 gallon drum of diesel and one of gas (non-ethanol) in my pole barn as well as seven 5 gallon cans of each. I use Stabil along with SeaFoam in the fuel. I use them on the property and just keep filling so it doesn’t go bad. I run through the 55 gallon drum of gas in about 4-6 months, diesel 6-8 months.

Also, have a truck full of gas and two cars full of diesel. We should be ok for most situations except a total collapse of society.

I'm trying to increase my perpetual stockpile. I keep 5 gallons on hand at all times minimum as it is. I want to up that and want to know the best way to go about it.

In the summer rotate it through your lawnmower every few weeks.
In the winter, do the same through your vehicles.

re: Best way to store gasoline for generator
You’re overthinking it.

I have 4, 5 gallon tanks, my generator holds 8. I typically keep one 5 gallon full in the winter along with the generator. That gets me a couple of days as I only run it for fridge/freezer/tv/coffee in the morning and again in the afternoon/evening...I’m working typically during these events anyway.

As of last week, I went ahead and filled two, and will have them all filled by June. If I run low of gas for the lawnmower or my mixed gas, that comes out the stock and I then refill that tank. I also keep two propane tanks and wood for a number of cooks on my smoker.

I need to get the oil changed in the generator/ lawnmower/truck soon too.

Throughout the year I run the generator towards the first of the month, shut the fuel valve and let it sputter a tad, but never full on stop. I try to run my saws once a week, I’m always using them it seems anyway. I need to go through my saw bag and buy some more spare parts too.

It’s like living anywhere else, you have to be prepared for your environment.

Ok, this is helpful because I have been letting it run to a full stop. My fuel valve and by off switch for the generator itself are the same knob and are the older champion models so it's the same position on the dial. So i have to be very careful about cutting off the fuel without cutting off the whole generator and leaving gas in the system.

So once it starts sputtering it's fine to just shut it down totally?

What model truck? Most newer trucks have an internal screen to prevent siphoning

I fill up about 50 gallons at start of hurricane season. if not used I put it in the vehicles after the season... I live in SWLA and got hammered last year and had to hunt gasoline after I used up my 50 gallons. We were without power about 30 days total between the different storms. But hopefully that was an anomaly.
