Self-professed crabbing novice here. Planning on going tomorrow (Sat.) out to Manchac by Middendorf’s using the old string & chicken method. When would be the best time to go?

From what I’ve seen during the week is the best time to go lol... Although, major feeding times tomorrow are noon till 3:00 so I’d keep that in mind.

Crabs love current and tide movement. Definitely better when the water is moving.

Yeah, but when will that be?

Looks like high tide is around 3:45pm. So the water will be coming in during the morning to early afternoon. Then around 3:45-4 it will start to fall.

summer is best, they feed best in warm water not cold
go early i find, the bite is best from dawn to about mid morning then it starts to slow down
use chicken necks, they last the longest and are cheap, if you crab a lot you can buy a 30 lbs box from any small grocery store for $15 and thats gives you about 160 necks. i separate what i use per trip into ziplocks for freezing. i realize thats a lot for the average person that doesnt go crabbing a lot but they will last a whole year like that in the freezer before they get freezer burnt

Better hope Dunk Reno don't catch you harassing his crabs.
Good luck

And the good thing is, the crabs don't really care if they are freezer burnt.

Go early in the moring...if anything to secure a spot. Euuurrrbody is going crabbing right now.
Give thought to how you plan to keep them alive after catching. You cant just toss them in a ice chest full of ice and close the lid. They do best cool not cold and if you shut the lid they can suffocate. Also make sure drain plug is pulled and chest is on a angle.
Dont leave any trash behind. Have fun.
