Looking for a new hiking/backcountry daypack. Trying to determine what size is best for me. Like many of you whenever I go on a hike I am tasked to carry others essentials as well. Thinking maybe a 30-50L size. Big Agnes just came out with some that look promising or maybe something like Mystery Ranch/Osprey l.

Look at Cotopaxi too, they’re really well made.

Osprey Talon 33 or Talon 22. I’ve got both. Go with the 33 if you’ll be carrying more than your own stuff just for a day out. I also use it as a carry on for travel.

I'd go between 30-40. My 50 can go for days.

My 40 holds plenty.

A 30-50L seems pretty over kill to me for a day pack. I have an osprey stratos 24 and a talon 22 and there is plenty of room for a day. I used the 24 in Glacier NP when my wife was pregnant and I had to carry most of her stuff in addition to mine.

I’ve been very happy with the waymark mile. It’s only 28L. For reference I’m a family of 4. Wife (no pics) me and a set of 7yr old twins.

My main pack is 50.

IMO anything over 30 would be overkill for a day pack

30-50L is more like 3 day pack size.

For a day pack, you shouldn't need anything larger than 25L, but try to keep it under 20L plus a water bladder if you can.

Lots of good brands already mentioned, but you could also consider London Bridge Trading if you want some different options.

I have the Pintler. I used it hiking up north all last week. For a day hike it was overkill but I'd rather have the extra room in case I need it.

ETA: when you have a load in it the frame is really comfortable. when you only have a couple of bottles of water and your lunch it's pretty annoying.

Both Osprey and Mountainsmith are good. I have both and my mtnsmith is over 25 years old at this point and still going strong.

I am pretty much in the same boat as you and I use an Osprey Stratus 24. It is just about perfect for me.

I’ve got a Mountain smith zero 40lL. Used it for a few 2-3 day pack trips but it’s a little small for my load. Handles the pounds just not enough room.

But it’s perfect for a daypack. Hydration sleeve, pockets on shoulder straps for phone, snacks, even a water bottle. I don’t find it’s too big for a day pack. Don’t care if it’s only half full the compression straps can be tightened to snug things up. Also use it as my carry on for weekend trips or short vacations. Can fit three days clothes easy then use to carry for sightseeing.

I was looking at these and that size. I typically always carry a med kit in any hiking pack I use plus food/ water & other stuff for others. Much rather have a bigger pack I have to synch down rather then get a larger pack.

I have the 5.11 Rush 24 2.0 and it's a 37 L day pack that's perfect in every way for me. It also includes a concealed carry pouch on the front.

Glad that works for you. I’d get ribbed by friends if I came out in something multicam or military looking lol.

One thing to think about is heat. I've had several different 3-day assault packs from London Bridge, Tactical Tailor, Eagle (I think they're Camelbak now), Camelbak, probably a couple of others. Most of them were issued, I'd get a new one, hand the old one down to someone. They all carry about the same and they're all hot as hell. The Camelbak was probably the best as it was newer and had the thick pads with space for air to circulate, but they're still hot.

Got the wife a Stratos 24 for a trip out west and unless stowage is a problem my old military stuff stays at home these days. The frame makes it carry better and it's a lot cooler.

I carry extra gear in my daypack (tools for trail maintenance, etc). Talon 44 works well for me.
