Best place or way to refinish a rifle
Posted by NatalbanyTigerFan on 12/13/17 at 6:54 pm20
My Dad’s old deer rifle has some rust and pitting in it and I’d like to see if I can have it touched up and use it.
Anyone know of a place that does this and what the average cost of having this done?

I'd drive to BR or even further for this also if someone has faith in their answer.

Someone just suggested Green Dragon Guns in Denham.
Anyone have any experience with this place?

Post some pics of what you are dealing with, light rust can be handled with gun oil and a bronze brush but you could have pitting to the metal or damage to the blueing depending on the amount of rust...

Last time I posted a pic here we were using photobucket....is that still the case?

No, photobucket won't hotlink anymore. I use Imgur, but there are a couple out there.

you are going to have some pitting on the metal. The gun oil scrubbed with a bronze brush won't hurt anything. It will remove the rust but it will probably also expose the pitting and the damaged bluing on the gun.

Yeah, after sitting in a closet for the last 30 years and not being taken care of properly. Its in pretty bad shape.
I hope I can get it cleaned up and stop the cancer (rust( from getting worse.
What about the cerakote finishing? Is that worth looking in to?

I don't know enough about it to give an opinion if it is a good choice. IS cerakote permanent?

Pretty sure it is. I need to read up on it more.

I looked up Green Dragon Guns and looks legit. I have 2 rifles I'd like to get the powder coating or cerakote done to them after this season

cerakote is the shitte and if done correctly will prevent the oxidation (rust) process. Dozens of colors to choose from.
before
after
I'd recommend a black graphite cerakote, stripped wood with hand rubbed oil finish

Man that is perfection right there!!
I'd love for my rifle to look half as good as that one day!

Around how much does the cerakote cost?

Damn that looks really good. Most cerakotes I've seen are green or earth or something like that.
If I was the OP that's what I would do.

cerakote sets the pricing for all dealers , you're looking at close to $200 which may involve dis-assembling your rifle
costs
you can do the wood yourself as I'll gladly walk you through the process

Reulet Gun Works in Goodbee does some really incredible work with restoration and cerekote. I'm about to send him an old Walther pistol to get redone.

I'm in on this myself. I've got an 870 EXPRESS that I'd like to see what I can do with it. Too many trips to a marsh and not quick enough cleaned has left a couple spots (just surface) but that matte finish (Parkerized not blued) isn't easy to work with.
