Last summer a tree contractor drove over the Bermuda front lawn. Left deep compressions up to 6 inches in some spots. Luckily he didn’t break my water main he drove over.

The grass continued to grow totally fine.

Can I just fill in the deep spots with sand and then Bermuda will grow up through it or is that too deep and I need to sod/seed over the fill material?

Too deep most likely. Just fill with topsoil and about one half inch of sand to top it off. Lots of water and it will cover quickly.

Fill it a couple of inches with sand, later this summer when the grass grows through the sand apply more until it's level

Bermuda will grow/take over a sand box. You'll be ok if all you're asking about is the bermuda growing.
