Is this the name of the actual river? All of the maps I consult say "Avoca Island Cutoff," which is a distributary of the Mississippi River starting at the Port Allen Locks and ending in Lake Palourde.

I never thought about where the river goes up past the spunky monkey, never when further up than that. Thanks for inspiring me to look that up

Are you looking at Google maps? Google maps says every body of water in that area of the map is "Avoca Island Cutoff"

Just checked Mapquest, which calls it Belle River. I was down there yesterday and was curious about the high water, so I did some research and saw its source is the Mississippi River.

Grew up with a family camp down there just south of the bridge and never heard of Avoca Island cutoff. But Pierre part is basically an island surrounded by Grand/Belle River, Bayou Grosbec, and lake Verret for the most part.
I now have a camp in Pigeon and the water is high as shite. we got to .1' over the 2016 levels.
My thread here with pictures
The water is normally 3-4' below my deck.
While it does originate at the port allen locks, most of that waterway is rain driven. the vast majority of rain that falls between the mississippi river and spillway levies gets funneled down to that river.

You'll lose your mind trying to follow the Atchafalaya River on Google Maps.

It only takes 15-20 minutes by boat from my camp in Pigeon to the spunky monkey by boat at around 45mph
