Do I need to slow my retrieve? Or are they just not biting in general when this happens?

I speed up when I see that happening and it seems to work.

Slow it down and fish it all the way to the boat.

Not a bad idea either. Chasing to the boat is aggressive behavior either way.

What are you throwing?

Need try an irregular retrieve. Maybe a pause or sudden twitch will stronger a bite

I have always been told that can be a result of color. Switch up the color of it is happening often.

Dead stick it. Then give it a good pop with the rod tip. That normally triggers a reaction strike.

Spinners and cranks you can try burning them.

Not a bass expert, but sometimes when I can site cast to trout or redfish and thyre doing that, Ill speed it up so they dont have time to think about it.

I use shadraps also for schooling fish that are right under the surface. Slow down and twitch. I’m done a walk the dog variation under the surface and it drives them nutts.

Speed up or hesitate then rip it. Make the same cast with something else, a cutter worm, fluke or swimming jig. It’s an aggressive fish that won’t commit, If it keeps happening I’d be looking for a bait or color change and run that same stretch of bank

Reposition your boat so that it's in an area with reds and specks. Problem solved.

That's my thinking. If they are following it they are thinking too hard. Zoom by em so they dont want to let it get away

Last weekend we were trolling crappies with Bandits and whenever we would stop motoring when reeling in a fish or turning, we had bass hitting the lure just floating. We had a few knock it out of the water. These were all smaller bass.

I reel faster and figure 8 the lure in the water. Bass are faster than you can move a lure in the water. If they want it they will get it. To me, erratic movements trigger reactions.

I agree with that. Almost every time I'd crank in so lines wouldn't get tangled when we'd have a fish on another line, I'd get a strike.

I’m big on the line of thinking that you let them tell you what to do. If they’re following but won’t commit that just tells you they want something different, but that’s all it tells you. There’s no one size fits all. This is actually the most fun part about bass fishing to me, figuring out that day if they want you to kill it or be more aggressive, smaller profile or larger, if your color is off. The pros would call this finding a pattern, and they will just take educated guesses at it until they figure it out. What those educated guesses are and how successful they turn out to be is the difference in a guy holding a big check and the rest of us.
