Assisted Push Mower Recommendations
Posted by bapple on 6/27/18 at 8:49 pm00
My brother who used to cut yards back in the high school days has a Honda mower that has an excellent engine and auto-choke system and has been running for nearly 15 years. 1-2 pulls every time and it’s running. But the down side is now the assisted part only gives you about 25% push compared to it being fully self propelled when he bought it.
I like the fact that the Honda engine is bulletproof but he’s recommended a Toro. I’m not up on all the recommended brands so any advice is appreciated. My yard is small so I don’t need any riders or zero turns.
TIA

I do not like my Toro. I got the most powerful consumer model (6.75hp Super Recycler), and it has always bogged down in St Aug. I have to go slow, and it pisses me off.
I've never had any mechanical problems with it though

Same experience. Doesn't pull shite uphill either.

Try putting new belt or checking the tensioner for the self-propelled? Pretty easy and cheaper than buying a new lawnmower.
Well it’s my brother’s mower that he let me borrow but needs it back now. It’s the only real piece of experience I have with an assisted push mower . Just needing to buy my own now and wonder which has the most robust assist.

Are you sure the drive belt does not need to be changed? The belt is probably around $20.
I have a Honda HRR216VKA, rear-wheel drive self-propelled. Been a gem of a mower, cuts thick grass and still mulches the clippings nearly to dust. Usually see them for $400 but often go on sale for $300 in the Fall. Pretty much all have a belt drive but the Honda will drag you into a double-time if you get onto the thumb paddles. Completely adjustable too.

If you want something that drags you around rear wheel drive or all wheel driver. They are usually better if you bag a lot of grass or cut on inclines.
Ease of use and easier to move around.
Front wheel drive.

I may check out the drive on his to see if it needs a belt.
Besides that I love the low-maintenance engine and Honda seems to get great reviews online. That may be my choice.

I have a self propelled Toro. I like it for the price point. My only complaint is that it seems like the bag fills up too fast and I have to continuously dump it in the back of my truck. That is probably because I mow once a week and cut low. Besides that, I like it.
My dad just gave me a Toro Timecutter 4800 Zero Turn. I use that now, but still use the push for the hard to reach places.

I had a self propelled toro deck with a Honda motor I sold last year. It had to be at least 15 years old and was running and pulling like the day I got it. I had got it used so only assuming the age but it wasn’t young lol.
If you go with a front wheel drive make sure it has the big back wheels. I prefer front wheel drive if you have a lot to go around, turns and such. Don’t buy from the big box stores if you want one to last. Not the same product at say Southland engine compared to Lowe’s. Lawnboy used to make a heck of a mower too not sure where they stand now.

I have a Toro pacer with the cast aluminum deck purchased new in 2005 which has never given me a lick of trouble. With the 6.5 Briggs I've never felt it was underpowered going thru my 1/2 acre, which is partially zoysia.
As others have said, I would be looking at a new belt or cable adjustment.

My toro has been good to me for the last year. I weekly mow two yards and has not let me down. It does bog a little bit in tall st. aug but most of the push mowers i have had/borrowed have as well.
I did enjoy the john deere push mower as well. But at the end of the day they are all pretty similar if you pick either the B&S motor or Honda motor. That is just my opinion.

Get a Honda. All you do is change the oil and air filter once a year and it runs like a champ. Had mine for 4 years now and regular maintenance is all I've had to do to it besides putting the drive belt back on the pulley when it came off once. I only run ethanol-free gas too.
